One thing I really noticed from the modern photo's is how much higher the ground level is now where the house was. with the retaining wall the earth is so much higher than it was from them dumping it there.

About 3/4 of the way down of this collection you will see about dozen photos of Berghof staff including six in the kitchen.

Wow, really great links Max!

Over the last link you can see photos of the bowling alley and what was totally new to me, Hitler at the bowling:

The bowling alley was also decorated for a wedding, does anyone know who is on the photo?

Johnnyrocket wrote:BERGHOF FRONT DOOR HANDLE

https://new.liveauctioneers.com/item/47 ... oor-handle

A significant relic from Adolf Hitler's retreat, the "Berghof": a solid brass door handle recovered at the scene by an American intelligence-gathering officer who had also landed on Omaha Beach on the morning of D-Day. The handle measures 10 1/2" long with a ribbed knob. Those entering the residence would push down upon this handle to activate the lock mechanism. This relic was kept by Col. Stratford E. McKenrick (1913-1992) who was a senior member of the headquarters staff of the 110th Field Artillery, 29th Infantry Division. McKenrick attached a label a paper tag to the handle in later years, now somewhat faded: "FRONT DOOR FROM EAGLE'S NEST BERCHTESGADEN LIBERATED O/A JUNE OR JULY 1945". Also present is McKenrick's CONAD pass, June, 1945, as well as copies taken from McKenrick's personal notebook indicating that he had arrived off Vierville (Omaha Beach) on June 6, 1945 and other details of his lengthy service which lasted the duration of the war. On June 6, 1944 McKenrick and elements of that division landed on one of the "Fox" landing zones on Omaha Beach to establish observation points and offload ammunition. In September, 1945 McKenrick was detached and ordered by the Continental Advanced Section (CONAD) in Nancy, France to proceed to Berchtesgaden to search the partially-destroyed Berghof for any remaining documents related to Hitler or the administration of the Third Reich. With letter of provenance from the officer's daughter.
STARTING BID
$750.00 (this eventually sold for over $3,500.00 I believe)

Hi Johnny,

because the handle does not look like a door handle, I've been looking for something similar. For me, this looks more like a locking handle of a window, since the handle was rather turned at the knob than was pressed at a door. It's just not a conventional door handle.

So I searched the Berghof and Kehlsteinhaus photos and found the following photo. It shows Hitler in front of a window in the Kehlsteinhaus. And before him at the window you can see a handle which is very similar to the one you posted. It might be there for the window lock. What do you think?

Pic of the Window:

And there is another Pic from the "Scharitzkehlzimmer". At the right bottom of the Window you can fairly see the handle:

Pics are from the Album "Kehlsteinhaus":

Those images are all from Harry von Gebhardt's google album who graciously
allow public to view.

He should be given recognition for the above.

Am I seeing things?

"Band of Brothers" image has the mountain view "flopped" from the Berghof window.
It also appears that the balcony juts right off from the Great room massive picture window, which is not accurate?

Right you are, Johnnyrocket, and that "Band of Brothers"scene wasn't filmed on the Berghof terrace, either, or even on the lawn outside of the Haus Wachenfeld section of the Berghof. But they did the best they could, since the Berghof and it's surroundings had been destroyed long before "Band of Brothers" began filming. Today we would expect that the film producer and director would have the whole place recreated electronically, which they could do, but that is also very expensive. In the end, "Band of Brothers" was a wonderful re-enactment of the era and I'm glad they made it!

"The Devil Makes Three" provides a very rare opportunity to see the remains of the Berghof as it looked in ruins in the early 1950s, and this film should be on the "Must-See" list of everyone here! No where else could you see this site as it actually was then. I doubt that the producer intended to create a historic archive of film on the Berghof, but nonetheless he did!

Enjoy,

Br. James

Funny I just view the last episode of the great series where they entered Berchtesgarden and stayed at the Berghof and Kehlsteinhaus Obersalzberg area for a few days. Funny how that scene was fresh in my mind.

It probably would not have cost to much more to make the many area scenes more accurate, but I guess they never realized that these Forums (especially "Axis History") would have much push-back as to the accuracy of the scene. Artistically the producers did a great job on the series, I guess "Artistic License" was used to make a more visual impact—over the exact details an aficionado would expect. :)

Be-that-as-it-may, the series cleaned up on its share of awards from the industry. Kudos are in order.
