In the biography of Hitler by John Toland, it is mentioned that Berlin had five airports (one of them Tempelhof). Could anybody say me the names of the other one.

Thanks

In the last days of the war, when the other airports in Berlin were either captured or damaged too much to land on, for a short time the East - West Axis was used as a (dangerous) landing area too. Cheers.

AFAIK Berlin-Schönefeld was a GDR built airport.
Others are:
Adlershof and Johannistal, both small AFs,
further a smaller ex Zeppelinfield at the south of Potsdam, which was used as an Arado AF and as an "Ausweichflugplatz".

In 1935 the Henschel aircraft production plant Schönefeld was build, and part of that plant was an airfield with three runways.
But it was used as a regular airport only since 1946.

Johannisthal was the name of the airport located in Adlershof.

Hello,

Does anyone know what units were at Johannisthal in April 1945 when it fell to the Russians?

Thanks,
Steve

As far as know - no units as Johannisthal by that time had lost any relevance for military flying.

Hi!

I've only been in Berlin once but as an aviation enthusiast I researched a bit about the history of aviation in Berlin. Otto Lilienthal made his experimental flights from Johannisthal airfield if I remember correctly. The development of Johannisthal airfield was blocked by the growth of the city around it. During the NS-era a colossal airport for the "Welthauptstadt Germania", Tempelhof, was built and is still used today.

Between 1933 and 1945 also airfields (military airbases) in Staaken and Gatow were used. Gatow later became an RAF base. There are many smaller airfields around Berlin and I guess there were even more during the war.
