Nazi Party Ralley in Nürnberg 104 August 1929

#2

Stu: This isn't much, but it might be useful. The 4th Parteitag der NSDAP took place from Thursday 1 August to Sunday 4 August 1929. It was the second Party rally held in Nürnberg, the first having occurred in 1927. The Nürnberg Oberbürgermeister was the social-liberal Hermann Luppe who despised the NSDAP. But the Polizeidirektor was Heinrich Gareis, who was at least sympathetic to the Party. Despite tacit approval from the police authority, there were pitched battles in the streets between the SA and the police, and many Jewish-owned shops were destroyed on Sunday the 4th. I know of only two VIP guests who attended the rally. One was Emil Kirdorf [1847-1938], a leading German industrialist and former Party member who had resigned from the Party in 1927 because he was displeased with the growing influence of the Party's socialist wing. The other was a German who had become well known as a writer in France, Ernst Jünger. I don't know anything about his writings, but Rudolf Hess extended the invitation to attend in Hitler's name. I have an unconfirmed figure that 25,000 SA and SS men attended the rally. For historical context, the first rally was held in 1923 in München, the second in 1926 in Weimar [of all places], the third in 1927 in Nürnberg, and the forth in 1929 in Nürnberg.
I hope this helps. Dwight R. Messimer

Dwight: Thanks! That's exactly the kind of stuff that makes historical fiction come alive. I'm writing about the 1929 rally in particular because it seems to me that '29 was the Nazi's break-out year, when they got big enough for German voters (rather than just meddling American and commie-scared German industrialists) to consider them serious contenders for German political leadership.

Shaunuk--thanks for the great lead! Two days and 16 hours until the auction closes! And best of all, the film is directed by Baldur von Schirach, a figure that I've been researching for quite some time. Thanks! Stu
