Waffen SS Paintings
I thought I'd start a series of paintings of the Waffen SS by posting these paintings which are at the US military academy Westpoint. Painting 1: SS-Unterscharfuehrer and Painting 2: SS-Obergruppenfuehrer Steiner (SS-Panzer-Diviison Wiking). jv

Waffen SS Paintings
Hi, I do not know the exact details of where these paintings were found and how they ended up at Westpoint. I can only assume that they were "spoils of war" when the American Armee collected whatever they could find of value to transport back to the USA. Not unlike the Nazis: Goering and Rosenberg in particular were avid collectors of European art. It is also well-known that there are many museum vaults with nazi works of art which will never go on display (for obvious reasons). jv

I agree 3 is not enough. Here's another painting by E.J.K. Strahl of the LSSAH: Dietrich in the company of his Ritterkreuztraeger. Who's who? (clue: this painting was reprinted in Kraetschmer's Ritterkreuztraeger der Waffen SS). jv

That first painting is amazing. It is the type of protrait painting you would see for a member of a royal family. Seeing an officer painted in such a manner, let alone a Waffen SS officer, is bizarre and extremely interesting. I would like to know more!
I have often thought that it would be interesting to have an art exhibit on soldiers, painting them as the subjects in paintings in which they would not normally be featured. This is exactly what I envisioned, actually. Really splendid.

My father told me of a restaurant that used to be here in Ottawa, Canada, that had paintings of SS soldiers in action all around painted by the owner himself. He'd be in one of the foreign legions and was not shy to speek if his time in the SS or to remember his fallen friends. If only it was still open...

Pretty good. Next to Dietrich to the right are: Teddy Wisch, Fritz Witt and Hein Springer (source: Kraetschmer). In Kraetschmer's Ritterkreuztrager the painter is mentioned as Ernst J. Krause who was a member of the LAH and who created the Ostmedaille. jvPanzerass wrote:From left to right to see Pleiß, Meyer, Bremer, Dietrich, Witt, all with Ritterkreuz.
