Der Führer im Bild series

Post by pionier44 » 28 Jun 2005 11:10

I have collected several Small (1"x 1 1/2") picture books that show Hitler with different subjects( the youth, in the homeland, with the workers, etc.) or show him involved with the military ( war in the east, in France, Belgium, etc.) All the photos are by Heinrich Hoffman. How many of these books were issued? The earliest i have is from 1934 and the last is from 1940. I've heard there are 26 different ones out there, is this correct? where can i find out more about these books? Thanks, Josef.

Heres what I found on Heinrich Hoffmann :
was born in Germany on 12th September, 1885. After leaving school he worked in his father's photography shop. He joined the German Army where he worked as an official photographer during the First World War. His first book of photographs were published in 1919.

In 1920 Hoffmann joined the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP) and soon became a close friend of Adolf Hitler. He became Hitler's official photographer and travelled with him everywhere. Over the next few years he took over 2.5 million photographs of Hitler.

Hoffmann's book, The Hitler Nobody Knows, was published in 1933. Other books on Hitler by Hoffmann included Jugend um Hitler (1934), Hitler in seiner Heimat (1938), Hitler in Italien (1938), Hitler Befreit Sudetenland (1938) and Das Antlitz des Führers (1939). In 1940 Hoffmann was elected to the Reichstag.

Hoffmann portraits of Hitler were used on Germany's postage stamps. Hitler acquired a large fortune as a result of Hoffman suggesting that Hitler should receive a royalty for every stamp sold.

Hoffmann was arrested at the end of the Second World War and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment as a Nazi profiteer. Heinrich Hoffmann died in Munich on 11th December, 1957.

Josef,

These are WHW (Winterhilfswerk) booklets. When you made a donation to the WHW you got one of these little booklets. I used to have a listing of all of them - I'll see if I can dig it up. There were also several that featured Knights Cross winners.

Geoff, thank you for the reply. I've been busy with school and finally have some time to check my mail. The books you are talking about are EXACTLY what I'm looking for info on. Anything you could dig up would be greatly appreiciated, even the slightest detail. This has been a longtime study of mine and i feel i'm about to get the info i need. Thanks again ,Josef

A few things on WFW

http://www.calvin.edu/academic/cas/gpa/booklet2.htm

http://www.usmbooks.com/whw.html

http://cgi.ebay.com/WHW-Knights-Cross-w ... dZViewItem

The last link is to someone whos selling the knights cross holder versions on ebay. I'd imagine they pop up on ebay every so often, you may want to keep an eye on them there.

Good luck in your search
