An interesting photo, Michal, but not Hilgenfeldt. This SA man has a cleft chin which Hilgenfeldt did not.

Best wishes,

That's right, Mike...Hilgenfeldt belonged to the SS, having attained the rank of SS-Gruppenführer on 20.4.1942, but was he also a member of the SA?

Though an obviously-ambitious worker, Hilgenfeldt was a late-comer to the NS Movement, not joining the NSDAP until August of 1929 -- Membership Number 143642. The Golden Party Badge which he wears in his portrait photos was an Honorary GPB awarded to him by Hitler on 11.9.1936.

Hello, James.

He was a member of the SA-Reserve from 01.10.1929 to 01.01.1932, and was promoted to SA-Truppführer ca. 1930.

Hilgenfeldt's online biography states the following: "Hilgenfeldt went missing in May 1945. He is thought to have committed suicide in Berlin, but the circumstances of his death are still unclear. Hilgenfeldt had a sister named Hedwig who officially declared Erich and his wife Leopoldine dead at the register's office in Berlin-Charlottenburg, in 1957." Are there any more details known about his death since 1957?

Herwart Vorländer in his biography or Schulz/Zinke and Mike Miller are able to report his death on 25.4.1945 during the defense of Berlin. death during street fighting with a weapon in his hand or killed during a attack or committed suicide.
On 6.5.1945 Director of Caritas Berlin declared he died in NSV building. No change since declaration of death by his sister in 1957.
