Otto Gümbel was born on 23 August 1876. His activity with the NSDAP began early he was an active member of the NSDAP and, with his two sons, participated in the Putsch. All 3 of them got the blutorden. I have a nice signed photo in my collection of the 3 of them together wearing their medals.
Interesting, thanks for the info.
Maybe you can send me a copy of the photo ?

According to his SSO (SSO-061B) Johann Sanktjohanser held the Blutorden.
Born 31 May 1904, Munich, SS No. 272405.
He was a young Maschinenschlosser and member of Freikorps Oberland at the time.
Later career with Schupo, Lapo, Gestapo.

Incidentally the handwritten entry on the SSO background sheet says his name is Sankjohanser - which is a mistake.

This is strange holder of the Blutorden: Sister (Schwester) Pia.
"Sister Pia saved Hitler's life in 1923 by placing her body in front of Hitler's. She was hit by a bullet in the right breast. In recognition of this service Hitler awarded her the Blutorden, the Iron Cross First Class and the War Service Cross First Class in Gold, and appointed her an SS-Obersturmführer."
She lived out her life at KL Dachau - possibly in the SS-Siedlung attended to by prisoners.
Information from a former Dachau prisoner, Krejci, who was captured serving in the army in Normandy, Aug 1944, and interrogated on 9 Sept 1944. (UK National Archives, HS 6/629)

The post above by Bani made me look at the Bundesarchiv Ludwigsburg holding.
The post above refers to an investigation in 1949; I see the lady was investigated again in 1973-1974 about KL Dachau.

Steve 248,

Sister Pia was never in the SS, she did receive the Blood Order and Golden Party Badge. But it was Christian Weber who threw his body in front of Hitler’s and was wounded.

As I understand it, Sister Pia provided nursing services to those wounded or injured at both the Battle of Coburg and the Putschists who were wounded during the revolutionary melee at the Feldherrnhalle in Munich on 9 November 1923, and these services won her recognition from the NSDAP by her reception of both the Coburg Badge and the Blood Order. She was an early member of the NSDAP, though because of her significant contribution to the NSDAP during the Putsch, she was apparently unaware that she needed to join the NSDAP again, following the Party's reorganization in February of 1925, and when she finally did rejoin in May of 1937, her new membership number was 5096034 -- far too high to qualify for the original numbered GPB. And according to the Klaus Patzwall list of AH Honorary GPB recipients, she was not accorded that honor.

Hi Br James,
You are definitely correct about Sister Pia as I have seen photos of her with the Coburg Badge and Blood Order, But no Golden Party Badge. I'm surprised she was overlooked and not awarded at least the honorary badge, but know there were plenty of Party Members who had a combination of the above mentioned awards, but very few who actually held all three.

Hi Erich,

Apparently, according to fairly recent (to me) scholarship, "Sister Pia" was not a 'favorite' of Hitler's or of other senior NSDAP members; apparently she saw herself as a 'bright star' of the early Hitler Movement and she tried to insert herself into gatherings of the Party throughout the lifetime of the NSDAP. It is said that since she held early membership in the pre-Putsch organization of the NSDAP and as she held both the Coburg Badge and the Blood Order -- the two highest awards of the fledgling Nazi Party -- that she thought she didn't have to re-apply for membership after the Party was reorganized in February of 1925 and that she could act as if her original membership was still valid. Well, if early membership wasn't 'valid' for Hitler and for many of the other Nazi elite -- and Hitler certainly preferred his new "Number 1" to his old "Number 555" -- then Sister Pia should also have re-joined when everyone else was doing so! But she didn't, until May of 1937, and by that note of personal arrogance on her part, she lost the ability to hold a Party Membership Number indicative of an Alte Kämpfer -- of an 'Old Fighter' which she considered herself to be! And when it came to considering the various lists of those to whom the AH Honorary GPB would be presented, Hitler did not want to see her name -- or her face -- in front of him!

I just noticed from the SSO of Otto Ohlendorf, RSHA III Amtschef, that he too was awarded the Blutorden.
I can't see a photo of his wearing the insignia.

Huge news about Ohlendorf, Steve. I had no idea. Could you please post the Blutorden reference(s) in his SSO?

Here's another Blutordensträger, who received some form of discipline for "maintaining friendly relations with Jews" and was later sentenced to death by a Belgian court (sentence apparently commuted).

Best wishes,
~ Mike
