Reichsamtsleiter Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Hammerbacher

Post by ImmaKronsberg » 13 May 2011, 00:36

Hi there

Newbie here; I am trying to solve a bit of a family puzzle. By his own description my grandfather was Reichsamtsleiter in the Kulturamt, based in the Parteikanzlei in München from 1940 to 1943.

I've been trying to figure out what kind of position that is, how senior and what exactly it would have entailed, but have come up empty.

Would anyone here have some thoughts or a lead on this?

Any responses much appreciated.

thanks

Imma,
-What was your grandfathers name? Was it the Kulturamt in der Reichspropagandaleitung or did it have to do with Das Amt Rosenberg? A little more info would be nice!!!!

From the few documents I have it appears that my grandfather (name Hammerbacher) first worked in Rudolph Hess' Stab in the Braune Haus, then, after Hess' departure, in Martin Borman's. Given that he had a culture-related title during those critical war years, I am assuming he had a rather marginal role. I have no evidence linking him with either Rosenberg or propaganda.

Reichsamtsleiter Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Hammerbacher was head of the Amt II B 3 "Kulturelle Fragen, Feiergestaltung, Volkskulturelle Verbände und Schriftumsfragem" in the Hauptamt II of the Partei-Kanzlei.

I am awestruck - how did you figure that one out?? Thank you very much!!! Any idea how junior/senior a post like this would have been? Who would have reported into?

immakronsberg,
- I found about the same info that Igor found. Dr. Hammerbacher on (May 12, 1941), which was the date that Bormann officially turned the Stab StdF into the Parteikanzlei was serving as Leiter des Amt II B-3 (Kultur und Feiergestaltung, Schriftgutfragen) beim Hauptamt II B der Parteikanzlei. Hammerbacher was 1 of 6 men leading 6 different Ämter inside of Hauptamt II B, which was lead until (1945) by Ritterbusch and then in (1945) Mauer took the Hauptamt over. So, you were correct in your assumption that he was a Reichsamtsleiter, but being that this was after the (1939) rank structure change, he (Dr. Hammerbacher) probably had a rank of Bereichsleiter der NSDAP. I am just guessing on his rank so do not quote me on that. All the info was retrieved form the Bundesarchives!

Its not quite right that Willi Ritterbusch led this Amt until 1945. Ritterbusch came to the Parteikanzlei in 1940 - his Mitgliedskarte gives him as "Buchhalter" (accountant); Summer 1940 he was made Beauftragter des Reichskommissars in Nordbrabrant in the Netherlands; Okt. 1941 he came back to the Parteikanzlei and here led the Amt IIB from 1942-July 1943; July 1943-1945 he was back in Holland as "Leiter des Arbeitsbereichs der NSDAP". He held this post until 1945.

It is unclear when Adolf Mauer held the post, but Longerich gives until 1945 - have a look at Peter Longerichs "Hitlers Stellvertreter".

Thanks again everyone, very much appreciated - I've been digging in the Bundesarchiv too but this information had escaped me. You all are a great resource.
