Beer Hall Putsch
Re: Beer Hall Putsch
Thanks, Helly, and thanks Keir! Seems I got the route pretty much right. I'll make a photographic route of the march now!

Dang- Would have liked to have tagged along... You think you'll be making a return trip sometime this week?Mannheim wrote:Thanks, Helly, and thanks Keir! Seems I got the route pretty much right. I'll make a photographic route of the march now!
And Helly- What photos could someone who's contributed over 4,000 posts in 9 years possibly want? You must have seen everything by now! Are you looking for anything specific, or general shots of the roads?

Re: Beer Hall Putsch
Here are two contemporary prints from the IB No. 45/1935 which show the march route, although the streets aren't identified, and the area around the Honor Temples. The map of the march route at least allows us to visualize the streets that were taken...
Re: Beer Hall Putsch
Great photo Jeffhan. Thanks for sharing. I've seen a lot of film footage of the march re-enactments but never got the general idea of where they were going and how far they marched as many of these films were clipped.

Re: Beer Hall Putsch
Beautiful material Jeff!!! great map route Keir!!! The zone of the Honor Temple was not relationated to the Putsch. In that place were buried the corps after 1933, but the zone was not in the route of the Putsch.... The route is display in the second ilustration but the distances are longer, but are perfects, just the way that I wrote.
Great thread!!!

Fantastic images, jeffhan! Just what I've been looking for. What does "IB No. 45/1935" refer to? I've been trying to hunt down these images online last night and have been stymied

A german newspaper called "Illustrierter Beobachter", the number 45 of the year 1945.Keir wrote:Fantastic images, jeffhan! Just what I've been looking for. What does "IB No. 45/1935" refer to? I've been trying to hunt down these images online last night and have been stymied

Re: Beer Hall Putsch
Here's a better image of the march route, taken again from the Illustrierter Beobachter, No. 45/ 1935...
Re: Beer Hall Putsch
Thanks, everybody, especially Jeffhan. It seems I turned right into Dienerstrasse once I hit the Marienplatz and followed it past Max Josefplatz into Residenzstrasse when I should have continued on to Weinstrasse. Helly is correct: the distances are much longer. I will - when I get time - put together a modern day photo tour of the march route for anyone who's interested. I did take photos of the Weinstrasse just in case, as at the time I had read conflicting versions of the route. Alas, I won't be in Munich again anytime soon but will be in Berlin in a month.

Just came back from the library with the bookMuenchen- Hauptstadt der Bewegung and it identifies the artist of the route that jeffhan provided (Marsch des 9.November vom Buergerbraukeller zur Feldherrnhalle) as Zeno Diemer, 1935.
A few more of his works of Munich

Thanks, Geoff. I always use your site when travelling in Germany. A close look at the Diemer map shows only single columns on the Ludwigsbrucke. Artistic licence I imagine.

Hello Keir,
Cool photos you got from the library. I hope this is not a stupid question, but are libraries in Germany allowed to carry period books on the Third Reich era?
Best,
James

Yeah; they can't very well pretend it didn't happen, although I guess there has to be some restrictions on the focus. I doubt I'd be able to find Röhm's memoirs, for example, but quite a few about Munich including a couple of interactive DVDs. Finding anything on Freising where I live is another matter. There was one book the library had- Freising unter dem Hakenkreuz.
Here are a couple of photos from another book- Muenchen- Hauptstadt der Bewegung.
1st photo is near the start of the procession; behind the last building on the left side was the Bürgerbräukeller.
2nd is near the end on Residenzstraße.
