Not so much about a nazi party in Australia as ‘Australian Perceptions of Nazism 1933—1939’
In a 1971 Flinders University thesis M. S. Regan looked at ‘Australian Perceptions of Nazism 1933—1939’ examining the attitudes towards Nazism by various Australian newspapers, including the Advertiser. The point is made very clearly that Australians, including South Australians, had a most distorted view of Nazism. Nazism was examined by observers who were philosophically liberal and saw everything from that perspective. The Advertiser in 1933 considered Hitler as good for law and order [4] and the violence of the regime was seen as being part of a revolutionary fervour rather than an instrument of government. [5] Two years later, in 1935, the Advertiser saw Hitler as operating within a democratic framework, although the violence was then attributed to inexperience. [6] Yet in apparent contradiction to the above the Advertiser as early as 1933 differentiated between the German Government and the German people. [7] Although the Advertiser viewed the annexation of Austria as immoral, [8] the newspaper failed to understand that war was an instrument of Nazi policy. It was firmly believed that if the German people knew all the facts then Hitler would be forced to change his policies. [9] In the same year, 1938, the Advertiser was still excusing the German Government’s treatment of the Jews as an ‘administrative oversight’. [10]

In Australia there was "Stützpunkt" of the Auslands-Organisation der NSDAP for former german citizen living in Australia organised into an OA-Landeskreis.
SP Adelaide
SP Brisbane
SP Melbourne
SP Sydney
SP Tanunda

Landeskreis was disbanded on 8 december 1936

Generalkonsul Rudolf Amis created Bundes des Deutschtums in Australien und Neuseeland.

Tweed Daily (Murwillumbah, NSW)

Wed 12 Jul 1939 Page 5
Nazis in Australia Quiet
CANBERRA, Tuesday: —

Reports furnished to the Federal Government by the Commonwealth Investigation Branch show that no attempt is being made to bring the
Nazi movement in Australia into the open.
Members of Nazi organisations apparently realised that public advocacy of their views would not be tolerated.

The investigation Branch is keeping a close watch on the Nazi headquarters in the capitals.
In addition to meetings of Germans at the Club Tivoli, Melbourne, the Nazis have a 'Strength Through Joy' movement.

Picnic trips to Belgrave are arranged, but as these have no military significance the Commonwealth does not interfere.

In the event of an emergency, however plans for the effective control of foreign organisations would be put into operation immediately.

There is reason to believe that, some members of Australian Nazi organisations do not subscribe to the Nazi ideas but knowing that the Berlin authorities keep a close watch on German nationals overseas they prefer to show interest as a means of preventing difficulties for their
relatives in Germany.

The Mercury (Hobart, Tasmania. ) Fri 14 Jul 1939 Page 6

NAZIS IN AUSTRALIA

IT might be thought that the lessons of European countries and of North and South America would constitute an efficient
warning to Australia as to the danger of permitting Nazi organisations to exist in this country. . All the evidence of fact
shows indisputably that no Nazi organisation is formed except for the purpose of propagating Nazi doctrine, imposing Nazi rules on
its members, and extending its influence in all directions.

The Commonwealth authorities stated on Tuesday that the movement was not brought into the open.
So much the more dangerous is it, therefore, for its activities are carried on surreptitiously.

It was also stated that reports had been received concerning the leaders of the movement, but it was added:
"It is believed that the organisation is not interested in Australia from a military point of view."
The United Slates of America revealed the extent to which such organisation goes in spying and sabotage.

Proof exists of a Nazi organisation in Australia. Proof also exists that in many other countries such organisation is devoted
to destroying the foundation of government, to an elaborate spy system, to supplying secret information to Berlin and establishing
agents and headquarters in preparation for the future when they can do the greatest injury.
There is no room in Australia for a body whose function stands definitely hostile in principle and practice to the wishes of the nation. '

Barrier Daily Truth (Broken Hill, NSW ) Sat 25 Aug 1945 Page 1
Nazis In Australia
Were Organised

Sydney, August 24. — A pre-war check up on aliens enabled security officers to round up and intern 260 Germans in
Australia within six hours of the declaration of war, officers said today.
Nearly every official of the Nazi Party arrested in Sydney had firearms in his home. Storm troopers had collapsible
steel truncheons and a fifth of the members of the Hitler Youth Movement had uniforms complete with numbered shoulder tan bandoliers and hunting knives. Many had .22 rifles. Most of the weapons found, however, were sporting rifles.
The Nazi Party in Australia was small, but well organised, said one officer. They had sufficient weapons to make a good deal of trouble. Most of them had photographs of Hitter and copies of 'Mein Kampf.' There was also an Italian movement, but it was not so highly organised and had more banners
than weapons.
The arrested Japanese had few fire arms, but many had keen-edged swords.

Thanks for that Georges JEROME
As you know, most of the locations are state capital cities, but Tanunda is a small town in South Australia
The first settlement in the vicinity of what is today known as Tanunda was the village of Bethanien, settled in 1842
by Prussian immigrants
