A friend of mine from Ukraine sent me a picture of a hunting knife from Nazi time currently on private sale
He asked me to translate him the inscription but I found some mismatches
The inscription is the following:
"Ehrengeschenk des Deutschen Jägerschaft
Der Gaujägermeister für den Jagdgau Wien
Oberbürgermeister Dr. Ing. Neubacher, 5.6.1937"
From what I could find in some public sources, Dr. Ing. Neubacher was indeed a mayor of Wien but after Anschluss of Austria which occurred in 1938.
So the first mismatch is the date. Other mismatches in my opinion are some letters like U in gaU which seems like gaN, Neubacher which seems like KENbacher, and s in OberbürgermeiSter which seems like F.
Unfortunately I couldn't find any information about the Jagdgau Wien and when it was founded but I suppose that it happenned not before the Anschluss.
Is it a fake knife?
Thanks for your help
Gaujägermeister für den Jagdgau Wien
Re: Gaujägermeister für den Jagdgau Wien
If you read the inscription on the knife the name is misspelled: "Kenbacher" and - as you already know - the date is completly wrong. Therefore it appears as a fake.

Thanks for the fast reply. With the second opinion from Austria I am more than satisfied.
