Question re Hitler

#1

Post by Imad » 01 Oct 2019, 18:02

Hello
According to Alan Bullock’s biography of the Führer, his first attempt to enter the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts ended in failure and the author quotes the following from the Academy’s classification list:
Adolf Hitler. German. Catholic. Father, civil servant.
The only curiosity here is the ‘German’ part.
AFAIK Hitler didn’t formally acquire German citizenship until after he came to power.
Any idea why the Academy would have classified him as German?

Academy did not classify anyone.
That's what AH put himself on his application form.

No I think I have it figured out. German here probably means ethnic German. I forgot that Vienna at that time was the capital of not just Austria but also of the Austro Hungarian Empire, with its diverse mix of peoples.

I wonder whether that record from the Vienna Academy wasn't 'revised' after 1933, or even after 1938? 'Historical adjustment' was not an unfamiliar concept to the NSDAP!

Cheers,

Br. James
