What's so funny, Doctor?
I thought the attached photos, taken in Munich on November 8, 1943, were interesting...and amusing. They are exactly the same...with one glaring difference. In Stalinist fashion, Dr. Goebbels was transformed for the cover of the "Illustrierter Beobachter" No. 46/1943.
The "laughing Goebbels" photo comes from Eitel Lange's book "Der Reichsmarschall im Kriege", which was published in Germany in 1950, only four years after Goering's death. Lange was a PK man attached to Goering's staff; it amazes me that such a portrait of the Reichsmarschall could have been done at that time.
At least 80% of the photos were entirely new to me, and the book is well worth getting just for them. All kinds of candid shots: Goering being asked to show his papers at a checkpoint; Erich Hartmann being searched before the award of the Diamonds; Goering playing around with a Sturmgewehr in 1945, etc. There are also numerous interesting shots of Goering's last wartime birthday celebration, in January 1945.
I wish I had gotten this book ages ago. It doesn't go for all that much money and is highly recommended!

Hi Jeffhan. Hadn’t seen you post in some time but I hadn’t been to this thread for awhile either.
Yes, this sounds like a gem of a book . I’ll have to get a copy at some point. Loads of photos ? Enough to get by without knowing fluent German?

Hi John -
Even if you don't know any German, I would recommend it just for the photos. There are 152 photo pages, and most are full-page images. They are consistently quite interesting, and most were new to me.
There are two copies on Ebay now, both starting at $35.00 or Best Offer. I was going to get one of these, but wound up finding one for $5.00. Such a deal!

I didn't particularly *want* to buy another book but you left me no choice, Jeff.
Thanks for the tip.

Mike,
Boy do I know that feeling! How do I deal with it? Well, today I bought a biography of Roland Freisler. So I guess I don't deal with it very successfully.
The Lange book is well worth getting, and it's not all that expensive.
Best!
Jeff

Two copies at ZVAB:
"Der Reichsmarschall im Kriege. Ein Bericht in Wort und Bild, 1950!"
Link: https://www.zvab.com/buch-suchen/titel/ ... ange/buch/
German term: "Rechtfertigungsliteratur“ after the year 1945. (Difficult to translate...)
Hans
P.S. The books, for example Konstantin Hierl wrote after 1945, are "Rechtfertigungsliteratur“.

Finally found a copy with dust jacket for US 41.00 plus shipping. Not bad. Can’t wait to see this item.
Re: What's so funny, Doctor?
My copy of this book has arrived and I’ve had a chance to review. Jeff was correct - you don’t need to understand German to appreciate this book. There are about 5 thick, separate photo sections split evenly through the text. Mine has a dust jacket- in color - the rest are bw. Photos look like they were taken yesterday. I would say about 80% are not common- at least I’ve never seen them before. Choice morsels: Goering in glasses during shoots with guests , some while testing machine guns. Goering piloting various fighter planes, cartoons drawn by Ernst Udet, many photos of 5 year old Edda, Emmy touring Italy, hosting Japanese (Matsuoka, Yamashita), Karinhall interior, speaking at Sportspalast. One I found fascinating was one of his associates dressed in some kind of Ukrainian tribal robes - almost looks Masonic. The only bad thing about my copy is that many of the plates stuck together (mold, mildew?) and I had to carefully split them apart (mostly the corners). Im very pleased with this book and feel it’s worth it to get if you have an interest in the Reichsmarchall.
