Thank you Gentlemen. I see the sub-divisions were designated with Roman numerals. Perhaps a few yeares earlier would Arabic numerals have been used? I ask because I have seen this PPK holster which would date from the mid 1930s I believe, marked with a stamp of one of the Gau Hamburg Kreises. But it appears the number is 7. Can I presume it is still Hamburg-Altona? Thank you.

There were changes every year in 1930's, but I haven't seen Arabic numerals at all.

1935/36 - no numbers for Kreise, just names. Altona is not there.
There was Kreis Altona-Elbe at that time (perhaps not in Gau Hamburg ?).

1936/37 - no numbers for Kreise, just names (there were 15 of them). Altona is not there by name as well.
Again there was Kreis Altona-Elbe, but not sure in which Gau.

1937/38 - Roman numbers for Kreise (10 of them) - Altona listed as nr. VII in Gau Hamburg.
-----------------

This info is from Altona and Hamburg address books, not from official NSDAP publications, so there could be some inconsistency. :(

Please rembember that due to the Groß-Hamburg-Gesetz from 01.04.1937 Hamburg in 1938 grew from 415 to 735 qkm² and from 1,2mio to 1,7mio inhabitants - Altona, Wandsbek and Harburg became part of Hamburg. So the NSDAP-organisation changes also totally at this time: for example the old Kreise Eimsbüttel Nord and Süd became now only Kreis I. The kreis-numbers were implented in 1938.

I'm not sure whether this map shows the final organization of Hamburg, but it's rather near

In Adressbuch Hamburg from 1940 all Kreises are mentioned - without names, only numbers!

There are names for Kreise VII-X - look closer!

I'm not sure whether this map shows ...

Good find, Puck!
So they used Arabic numbers for Kreise - on maps!

No, it's not that simple - this are the only the exact postal adresses of the "new territories"

The same as Berlin or Wien....
It's my hometown - I should have known that before
