Persecution of Nazi party members in post war Germany.

As it became obvious that Germany, Berlin and the Third Reich were doomed I’d imaging most Nation Socialist party members (civilians, not military) done everything possible to destroy all evidence of their alliance and support of Hitler in fear of persecution from invading nations and anti-nazi Germans. Was this the case? Were any documents discovered revealing the identities of nazi civilians and used for reprisal attacks and killings. I’d be interested to know if anyone could tell me.

Well, I imagine a few things must be taken into account:

1. As soon as the party as a whole realised the war was lost, they would have started burning all their documents. Persons involved in the Nazi Party on a local level probably would have burnt evidence of them ever being involved and/or attempt to flee from Germany.

2. If any documents did exist, the majority of them would have been discovered by the Soviet Union. Depending on what was of interest to the Russians, such documents may have been destroyed or if still around, probably in the Soviet archives or one of the Russian archives.
