Hitlers Pants

U.S. Army Photo Archive #304-534
A friend sent me a copy of an unconsciously surreal photograph titled U.S. Army Photo Archive #304-534. (I wonder if the phrase "unconsciously surreal" is repetitiously redundant?) The photograph purports to show a U.S. Army officer pointing to a burning pile of something or another. I guess he's pointing just in case the viewer of the image failed to notice that part of the photograph.
The burning pile of something or another is supposed to be a pair of Hitler's pants, the ones he was wearing on 20 July 1944 during the failed assassination attempt. The caption explains that the pants were destroyed to "prevent their symbolic worship of what Hitler stood for."

The whole thing sounds like a forgery, but it's hard to tell when it comes to the military. Army facts can be weirder than the strangest civilian fiction.

Lucky they got to those pants in time, I just imagine seeing a group of neo nazis parading around with Hitlers pants and jocks.

Believe it or not, those are Hitler's trousers and they are being burned because some swivel chair commando got the idea that if they were preserved they might take on the same virtues attributed to the relics of saints.

There is a companion picture of the one illustrated that shows this same officer holding up the shredded trousers before they were lit.

The allies held a stronger belief in the "Mystique of Hitler" than the Germans. Strange, ain't it?

The mystique thing seems to have taken wings, judging by the interest in this forum.

But voll beschissene unterhosen?

Off topic joke:

Admiral Nelson's lookout called down "4 froggy Frigates!" Nelson said to his aid, "go below and get my red jacket". The aid said "But Admiral Nelson sir, then the French sharpshooters will be able to see you!" To which Nelson replied "Ah, yes, but if I am wounded, the color of my jacket will disquise the blood, and the men will not loose heart".

Then the lookout cried "Admiral Nelson sir! 44 froggy Frigates!" Then Nelson said to his aid "Go below and get my brown corduroy trowsers".

Good one, Dan. You sure know how to hurt an old Limejuicer!

But how the hell did the Amis know those pants were the ones Hitler wore on the day of the assasination attempt? Unless, of course, they were fouled by him.

I have no idea - but Hitlers torn, almost shredded, pants were widely pictured after 20.7.44 in the Nazi media and perhaps sent to Munich or elswhere for the 'relic collection' at The Brown House - which is where I guess the Americans found them.

In Kershaw's Nemesis there is picture of an orderly (Linge?) holding up a pair of Hitler's trousers.

The trousers are grey and are the ones he was wearing on the day of the 20 July assasination attempt.

They are severly shreaded.

Bill:

I don't know what size of pants Hitler wore but those pants look very
large...makes me wonder whose pants they really are?
Maybe Hitler was a large person but I don't think so----he seemed ordinary to me.

What weight was Hitler?
What size of clothing did Hitler wear by the way?
Jacket, pants, shirts and shoes?

Hitler's pants

#15

Post by Lobscouse » 10 Oct 2002, 19:47

Thank you varjag for that. Displaying a pair of shredded pants seems to go against the very essence of Teutonic or Third Reich symbolism of heroism, as we have seen displayed in art. I mean this would be no challenge to the Hermannsdenkmal.

Annelie, you are not alone in your assessment of those pants, as they seem more likely to be a part of Herman Georing's wardrobe.

Nothing above is intended to be disrespectful to the memory of anyone alive or dead.
