Regarding the use of wooden soles on shoes in occupied France that I mentioned at http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 7#p1392137, here are some more interesting photos and text from Collaboration and Resistance: Images of Life in Vichy France 1940-1944 (Texts by Denis Peschanski...[et al.] ):
German requisitions of leather seriously affected the work of bootmakers, shoemakers, and artisans, who had to use what they found at hand. In the spring of 1941, shoe stores displayed shoes with wooden soles in their windows. Veritable publicity campaigns promoted this new product. An exhibition of "the shoe 1941" took place in Paris in July, its goal to champion "the relief shift of leather by wood." It presented the latest models in fabric, woven straw, and synthetic leather. In 1944, with shortages even worse, some artisans resorted to cutting and gluing old felt hats to make sandals.

Apparently not everyone had to worry about wooden soles on shoes. Or perhaps this photo is from 1940, early in the Occupation. From Laszlo Dormandi et Jacques Lorraine, Notre Temps: Histoire du Monde - 1930-1947.
