That is a very good point.
They are dominating and atmospheric structures. In some, you get a "glimse" of what a German victory would have looked like. I imagine structures and fortifications with that feel, on the Urals and the Atlantic coast and Norway.

Simon,

But don't forget that their current appearance is not what was intended. After the war, the outside should have been covered with stones to give them the looks of a medieval tower. This was done partly at the Tower in Berlin Tiergarten as a test. I understood that the stones for this were already ordered.

But indeed, these are impressive witnesses of the past!

Kind regards,

Maurice

Thanks for that Maurice, I never knew that!
So the Nazis were going to "Disneyfy" their fortifications!! The mind boggles.

It's not very clear, but if you look closely, you can see flak canons in the towers.
where in berlin are those towers located and are there still ruins of them left ??

Please read this topic from the beginning, i think the answers are already there.

Two towers in Hamburg - 3 x 2 in Wienna (Leitturm + Gefechtsturm) - 1 (ruin) in Berlin.

There is only one Flakbunker remaining in Berlin. It´s the one at Humboldthain.
This bunker can be visited with berliner-unterwelten.de.
for the tour check: http://berliner-unterwelten.de/tour-2.14.1.html

They have also a webpage about the history of flaktürme:
http://berliner-unterwelten.de/geschich ... .63.0.html (german only) with some old historic fotos.

some pics of the flak and leitturm (the remainigs) can be found at http://lostplaces.freundhein.de

a webpage with all models of the flaktowers in berlin, hamburg and vienna can be found:
http://news.webshots.com/album/532858044kNrGQM

historical fotos of flaktowers can be found at:
http://bpkgate.picturemaxx.com/index.php?LANGUAGE=EN_EN
in the search field enter "flakturm" or "humboldthain".

here is a google earth link with the locations of the flaktowers in berlin:

Yes, you are correct there is only one flak tower left (partial) in Berlin, the Humboldthain.
Where once it was barren it is now part of a park. Lots of trees and greenery.

Be prepared though for all the graffiti that you will see.
I took that as a sign of disrespect.

Well, no, the Friedrichshain tower is still there - it's just buried under a mountain of rubble called the Bunkerberg. It includes all the rubble from the Stadtschloss, so when they start to rebuild the Schloss they might demolish the Bunkerberg and retrieve the stones, thus uncovering the flakturm underneath. As I said above, if you climb up the Bunkerberg, you can see the gun platforms sticking out of the ground at the top.

Tony le Tissier's Berlin Then and Now has some pretty interesting pictures of the Flak Towers, including a series of photos that show the various flak towers being demolished after the war. The book also has a picture or two of the flooded tunnels which shows the extent to which they flooded (the water level only goes up to the station).

Is the graffiti as good as this on a Hamburg bunker?
There are plans to preserve what's left of the Berlin wall, graffiti and all

No, not at all.

It was the typical graffiti that one sees and really doesn't know what it says or represents.
I was surprised however how many people came to wonder through the tower area and it is now in an
nice looking park and even lots of trees where obviously it was not originally.

Were those monsters efficient?! I mean - did they prevent centres of Vienna and Berlin from being bombed? Anyone know how many bombers were downed by Flakturme?!
