Bit Strange though is the QWERTY layout on a German Keyboard as the German keybord layout is QWERTZ. Don't you think that the SS runes above the #2 are just a simple " ?

Wow, I didn't even notice the QWERTY. Great eye for noticing that. So does that tell you anything? And I agree with you.the marks above the 2 just look like quotation marks to me too.

I had a look at other photos of this typewriter you posted in different topic.
There seem to be no maker logos visible anywhere? Quite unusual. Was is repainted?

If it is an Erika 5, serial number points to 1935 as a production year.

Yes you are right in your assumption. We pondered why there were no decals on it too, but on very close examination of it you can barely see the Erika emblem behind the paint. Don't know if it was the war vet that painted it(highly unlikely) or if it was painted in Germany before he came across it. Heres a pic of the slug.
