A huge British bomb was found last night in Seelze, near Hanover. Thousands were forced to evacuate their homes while the bomb was defused.

As a side note to the WWII ordnance in Germany and elsewhere, there was an interesting thread on a similar subject on the MLU Forum a while back.

That thread was concentrated on WWI ordnance that is still being found in France to this day but also wandered around a bit and we discussed both postwar battle areas as well as training areas where unexploded ordnance is still a huge problem.

As a further point of interest, I live about 3 miles/5 kilometers from Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, just a bit north of the city of Atlanta, GA. which was the scene of a huge battle during the American Civil War. To this day, spent bullets and other artifacts are still being found. In fact, there have been three new housing estates started up on the road I live on this year, each being built on very large tracts of former farm or forest land that has been unused/unmolested for most of the last 150 or so years.

As soon as the bulldozers have cleared the land, the "Treasure Hunters" arrived with their metal detectors and shovels by the car/truck load. On one such parcel, I was told by the construction supervisor that the hunters there found a couple of large pails full of bullets and other wartime bits and pieces.

As always, stories within stories.

Bill

I was just on the Somme battlefield not far from Bray-Sur-Somme this past week. We found these:

As well as others that we didn't photograph. All sitting throughout one farmers recently plowed field.

10,000 residents and workers were evacuated in Potsdam after a US 500-lb bomb was found.
