Milwaukee News Links

#8

Post by Globalization41 » 16 Aug 2016, 05:37

Note: Google News Archive removed their Milwaukee Sentinel and Milwaukee Journal news links after the above post was made Saturday. The 9/22/1939 flashback-to-Poland link does not now work. Numerous other links from previous posts were also knocked out.

I have access to complete archives of certain newspapers of the NYC area. I just so happen to have read the entire month of may 1941 as it was very interesting time..not just in the european theater but even in the US.... with many heated debates between justification of seizing ships in American ports and whether the US Navy should be used for convoy purposes.... Even though the US was not at war.

Was there a specific topic or event you were looking for?

Thanks DB. It's pleasing to learn that someone has read through the May 1941 newspapers. ... I'm looking for news links that can be effeciently posted & collated. Specific to NYC would be local baseball write-ups & boxscores, production figures, employment figures, draft notices, shipping, banking figures, tax revenues, texts of war communiques, etc. Lengthy articles on the war in Europe & Asia would be nice too. ... I started this topic, May 16, 1941, based on the timing of the battle of the Bismarck & Hood, the Battle of Crete, and the beginning of Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak. It usually takes me more than a month to complete one day, meaning it would be a few months before reaching the Battle of Crete. ... However, May 16, 1941, is secondary to topic June 21, 1944, the Normandy period. ... The removal of the Milwaukee Sentinel and Milwaukee Journal links from the Google News Archive made the May 16, 1941, topic less complete, but the June 21, 1944, topic was very negatively affected. The main bulk of the news links to other newspapers remain intact, but there were many links knocked out to local Milwaukee draft notices, casualties, production, Milwaukee Brewers baseball, a war-time women's baseball league, and American Association baseball boxscores. ... By coincidence, the timing of the loss of the Milwaukee news links occurred during anti-law-&-order protests & looting by under-employed residents of Milwaukee (8/15/2016). All the other links remain. ... The June 21, 1944, date was picked because of Normandy and the lead-in to the beginning of the gigantic Soviet offensive on the Eastern Front. At the time, Uncle Sam supported intense fighting on three fronts, France, Italy, and Saipan, while supplying the world with an overflow of surplus production. ... Since the Milwaukee links went down, I've started two new topics, July 7, 1943 (beginning of the Battle of Kursk), and June 21, 1941 (the day before Germany's invasion of Russia).

Well links to entire papers I cannot do, but what I can do is get PDF files of specific articles (pretty much anyone I want) and upload them individually for you to have. So let's try it out... tell me the approximate day range and the specific (lets start with one) topic. I will upload here the articles I find. Doesn't hurt to try it out

How about the official war communiques from the May 17, 1941, edition of the New York Times? They should be titled "Texts of the Day's Communiques" and would be three or four columns with official statements from all belligerents.

Excellent. ... Would it be possible to make the font larger? Is it logistically difficult to transfer photos of articles into a post? ... In the '80s and '90s, I used to drive to libraries and photo-copy as many articles as possible, from (usually) The New York Times WWII period, before the libraries' clunky-like machines would break down. The photo-copying machines were coin operated, so I would take rolls of nickels and dimes with me. ... The history of WWII is infinite.

I tried doing each region as PDF file for you to download...because Strangely the Text of the Days Communiques on War is tricky with the way a computer is seeing the article as individuals instead of as one
