Travelling from Germany to Portugal in 1941

#1

In either late April or in May 1941, my German-Jewish grandparents were granted US immigration visas. They then left Frankfurt am Main (Germany) for Lisbon (Portugal) where they boarded a ship for the US, arriving on 13th June 1941. I am trying to establish by what route they travelled between Frankfurt and Lisbon.

I have a number of questions for members of this list....

1. Does anyone know of an archive in Germany that holds emigration records? (Specifically, I' interested in applications to emigrate and approvals granted.)

2. What routes between Germany and Lisbon were usually taken by individuals (such as my grandparents) who were legally emigrating?

3. Is it correct to assume that my grandparents travelled by train -- or is it possible that they travelled by air or ship?

4. Are there any publications that I should seek out that describe other people's experiences of travel between Germany and Portugal at this time?

Thank you!

This source says that these emigrants until July 1941 usually went by train via France to Lissabon or Barcelona and from there by ship to America:

It also says that in all known cases a deposit was put at the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). The JDC has an archive where you can search for specific names:

To get more answers for your questions, you might contact the Jewish Community in Frankfurt here:
