Phone call intercepts and recording of phone conversations

I have read several accounts of the Gestapo intercepting and listening in on phone conversations, both in Germany and occupied territories such as The Netherlands. Does anyone have information on how common this was and were recordings of these conversations made? If recordings exist, which archive would contain them? Of all the documentaries I have watched I have never seen this topic presented.
