The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
Well done seaburn - go to the top of the class - it was the tall thin tree! I was going to comment to wm that his posted color photo of the bend, before the road was modified, gives a very clear picture of just how sharp the bend was. I can so easily see what an excellent choice this spot was for the attempted assassination. Had the Sten Gun not jammed (they do - I know that from personal experience) I am not sure if Heydrich would have been killed. The Merc windows, which were up, were possibly bullet-proof or hevily reinforced glass. You can see quite clearly that the bomb fragments did not break the window glass, but merely scarred it.

Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
Unfortunately there is a problem with that theory - what is the point of bullet-proof glass in a soft top car, with non-reinforced body that was ripped open like a tin can by the explosion.
And another, that hand grenade was engineered to not produce any shrapnel so it could be deployed offensively, and because of that there was none...

Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
Um, yes, you raise a couple of very good points, wm. I understand that instructions for additional armored plating for those high end staff cars had already been promulgated. However, Heydrich, with his customary supreme arrogance had ignored this instruction. I would be interested to know what the assassins' actual plan of action was re the use of the Sten Gun and the Grenade when the vehicle had slowed right down to navigate the bend.
Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
Back to the ill fated Merc that sustined considerable damage during the assassination attempt: There seems to be some dispute that the staff car, at present kept somewhere in Prague, is not the actual car that was involved in the incident. Has anybody got any ideas if this is true?
Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
I don't want to monopolize this thread, but what set me thinking about Heydrich's staff car was this was the posting that can be found on on the following URL: <http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/17313-h ... car-found/>
Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
Thanks for posting some of the less frequently seen photos of the assassination. The large house with the bay windows on the other side of Kirchmayerstrasse has always intrigued me. Looks like it belonged to a professional man. The photo from the hill gives a much better view of it.
Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
I would say those houses built at the turn of the century certainly have soul.
The house on that photo seems quite new, its walls are still not blackened by soot.
Interestingly Prague ended behind it, further to the north there were orchards and farmers' fields. The owner had the best of both worlds: access to nature, and main roads and tram lines at walking distance.
The house in 1964 (from Atentát), the sidewalk in front of it must have been added after the war, underlying the fact the house was below the street level. and ten years later (from Sokolovo):

Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
Thanks for the photos showing the house from street level. I am also trying to gather information on the witnesses at the place the attack but there seems to be a remarkable scarcity on information this subject. These are the named witnesses I am aware of so far.
1. Marie Navarova - woman who flagged down passing van.
2. Marie Sochmanova - woman who had just alighted at the tram stop and was injured by the explosion.
3. Jan Zavazal - local coal merchant who heard explosion from his shop.
4. Milada Matulova - woman sunbathing in nearby garden who saw Gabcik run by after the shoot out with Klein outside Brauner's butcher's shop.
5. Karel Duben - first van driver stopped, but he continued on his way after a second larger van was flagged down.
6. Frantisek Sitta - second van driver flagged down. He took Heydrich to the hospital, accompanied by an off duty policeman.
7. Helene Pechar - the only place I have seen this witness mentioned is on a Gestapo sketch of the corner and she is placed just before the corner. I have never seen her referred to anywhere else.
8. Frantisek Brauner - the butcher who alerted Klein to the fact Gabcik was in his shop.
9. Possibly Klein's wife. Apparently the chaffeur Klein and his wife lived in the vicinity, and she came running from the corner to alert people to what had happened.
Unnamed witnesses
1. The off duty policeman.
2. The cart driver near the top of Na Kolinske who was pressed by Klein to help in the pursuit of Gabcik.
3. Tram passengers.
I would be interested if anyone knows any names of other witnesses, or has anything to add to the above. Thanks.

What beautifully engineered automobiles those early
1930s mercedes where. I Love how the numberplate has
SS runes on it. All the high-ranking national-socialists traveled
in vehicles even more beautiful than todays cars!
cheers.

Hi, I can help with a name of an off-duty police officer who was a passenger in the tram no.3,PaulW wrote:Thanks for the photos showing the house from street level. Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
I personally do not think so.9. Possibly Klein's wife. Apparently the chaffeur Klein and his wife lived in the vicinity, and she came running from the corner to alert people to what had happened.

Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
Heard he was to be promoted, did Himmler know the killers?
Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
One more photo...from before 1938.
Re: The place where Heydrich´s attempt was.
A while ago Czech newspaper published a list of all who received financial reward. It was based on a document from K.H. Frank office from 24th Dec 1942. Apparently 1,539,900 RM was paid. List sums up to 1,537,900 RM, so there is a small error of 2000 RM somewhere...
