This permissive environment existed already before the Anschlus,it was created by the main political Austrian parties who tried to surpass each other in Anti-Semitism . There were only few nazis before the Anschluss .There were no nazis in Austria in 1920,when the socialist PM of Lower Austria proposed to deport 20000 Jewish fugitives .There were how many nazis when the writer Bettauer was murdered in 1925 because he was Jewish ? When Lueger became mayor of Vienna in 1897 there were no nazis in Austria .Anti-Semitism in Austria was not created by the nazis, it existed already before Hitler was born .Sid Guttridge wrote: ↑15 Jan 2020 15:20Hi ljadw,
You are making my point for me. "Pent-up" and repressed mean pretty much the same thing.
It took the arrival of the Nazis in power before this was released.
You post, "No one was able to control the explosion of the anti-jewish hatred.....". Did anyone try? And, if it was uncontrolled, why was the death rate relatively low?
At the very least the Nazis created a permissive environment in Austria that had not previously existed.
Or do you believe it is pure coincidence that open pogroms against Austria's Jews broke out at the same time as the Anschluss?
Besides, there were already anti-Jewish pogroms before he Anschluss .
