Hi ljadw,

You are making my point for me. "Pent-up" and repressed mean pretty much the same thing.

It took the arrival of the Nazis in power before this was released.

You post, "No one was able to control the explosion of the anti-jewish hatred.....". Did anyone try? And, if it was uncontrolled, why was the death rate relatively low?

At the very least the Nazis created a permissive environment in Austria that had not previously existed.

Or do you believe it is pure coincidence that open pogroms against Austria's Jews broke out at the same time as the Anschluss?

Cheers,

Sid.
This permissive environment existed already before the Anschlus,it was created by the main political Austrian parties who tried to surpass each other in Anti-Semitism . There were only few nazis before the Anschluss .There were no nazis in Austria in 1920,when the socialist PM of Lower Austria proposed to deport 20000 Jewish fugitives .There were how many nazis when the writer Bettauer was murdered in 1925 because he was Jewish ? When Lueger became mayor of Vienna in 1897 there were no nazis in Austria .Anti-Semitism in Austria was not created by the nazis, it existed already before Hitler was born .
Besides, there were already anti-Jewish pogroms before he Anschluss .

Hi ljadw,

Nobody is claiming anti-Semitism in Austria was created by the Nazis and so nobody has to defend that proposition.

You post, "Besides, there were already anti-Jewish pogroms before he Anschluss."

Can you give more details of earlier pogroms in Austria? Remember, a pogrom is a collective action against Jews as a group, not just an occasional racially-motivated murder.

Cheers,

Sid.

From ''Jüdisches Leben in Wiuen "
In december 1929 the well-known Café Produktenborse was destroyed . It was frequented by Jews.
In 1932 there was an attack on a prayer room in Café Sperlhof (owned by Jews) ,the Café was destroyed and several people were beaten .
Already in 1920 the Jews were forced to form their own militia (Jüdisches Selbstwehr).

Hi ljadw,

I think Kristallnacht rather blows out of the water the propositions (1) Austrian anti-Semitism was necessarily much worse than that prevailing in the Alt Reich in 1938 and (2) that the Nazis were all that reluctant for such persecutions to happen in front of the camera.

Anti-Semitism was widespread across Europe in the inter-war years. Austria only began to become exceptional in this regard after the Anschluss.

Cheers,

Sid.
A late answer ( caused by forum problems,etc ) :
''Arisierung " von Gemeindewohnungen in Wien ( E-Thesis by Judith Adam ) :
P33 : Der Durchschnittswiener nahm sich was er wollte : The average inhabitant of Vienna took what he wanted
P 35 :In Wien wurde weiter nach Gutdürfen geraubt, erpresst und verhaftet . : there were in Vienna stealing, blackmail and arrests at will.
This was done mostly by non Nazis ( Vienna was a red stronghold) . The author gives 2 reasons : a very strong and very old antisemitism in Austria and the very bad social and economic situation : 10 % of the population of VIenna was without a job and there were 10% of so-called ( wrongly ) Jews : thus the (unjustified ) reaction is easily to understand.
The author said also that it was sufficient to claim to be a Gestapo agent or to wear a nazi brassard to have to opportunity to steal, etc..
Also from the same source : all this caused very angry reactions and even threats from people as Heydrich and Eichmann.
All this happened BEFORE the Kristallnacht .
See also P 22 of Antisemitismus in Österreich and on P 21 one can read the following :''Neben der Gier motivierte der alte, lange aufgestaute Hass die Übergriffe und Verfolgungen.Unmittelbar nach dem Anschluss wurden weitere Teile der österreichische Bevölkerung von einer regelrechten ''antijüdischen Massenhysterie'' erfasst ." An antijewish mass hysteria
That's why I wrote about uncontrollable reactions .

Terry Duncan!
It´s a violation of the forum rules to provide incorrect informations and lying to the people!
The post you deleted contained EVIDENCE that this user spread misinformations and thus lied in his earlier posts, and that not only one time! This evidence did verify that!! It´s not your job to care that this person can continue to spread misinformation without the risk that his lies will get rebuted and he is continuosly damaging the reputation of the forum (which is even used by fellow scholars as source!)! Neither can the forum rules overrule ACTUAL LAWS!
In addtion he violated the forum rules by publishing incorrect text from a fellow historian publication and called it a quote! I asked for the proper source which according the forum rules he MUST state! Where was your action then!?
I reported this misinformation and even did provide a link to the publication and specific page which did contained the correct text!! The only thing David Thompson(who read my notification), took was to close my report. No actions taken!
You´ll be reported for the abuse of your function.
