Celles panther then and now

#46

Post by Vince Cnude » 25 Aug 2005, 23:28

A few years ago the Bundeswehr “restored” the panther by cutting everything off, making it something smooth.

Hi moses,

Sorry if I did not make myself clear but English is not my mother language.

The German army secured the tank by removing everything that could hurt someone walking on it. By doing so they altered the general shape of the vehicle, I don’t think this is the way such relic should be preserved.

Regards

no, you were clear. i just don't understand why they would do that to the tank. if they want something safe for children to climb on, they could just build a little jungle gym out of wood. they don't need to mess up a historical artifact from the greatest war in world history. :)

i agree.

Thanks for the link Gregory, some very interesting pictures :D

MadderCat

The guy is a local historian; he published a very interesting book on Celle’s pocket. I had the chance to meet him when I visited the area. He seemed a bit bitter about the inaction of local authorities. He also told me that a more realistic paint job might be done in the coming years if some budget can be found.

Here is another view of the tank, the wall has changed but the signs seem to be the same as on the second pictures.
