Who is this woman? What happened to her?

Hi all,

For as long as I can remember I have always seen footage of a german girl with a black eye in numerous end of WW2 documentries. The footage of her is always used when describing allied and Soviet rapes in these documentries. The footage is in colour, it displays a young 20-something lady with light brown hair walking and standing in front of the camera. She looks totally "out of it" and seems to be clutching a pack of playing cards? She is wearing a black long sleeved top with what appears to be german army trousers - the braces are hanging by her side too.

Today I watched a BBC documentry called "After The War: Conquering Germany" and it showed a lot of footage of this lady whilst discussing rapes etc. I have to admit that even though I have seen this footage before it has indeed hit a nerve within me. I can't help but feel quite upset for this woman, she looks real upset and from physical appearences seems to have had the sh1t kicked out of her. I have included some screenshots for you all to look at...

My questions are, who is she? And what happened to her?

If this has been posted b4 then please accept my apologies and point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

Not necessarily cards, it can be a little Bible.

A victim of the "Liberation of Europa" for the democratic regimes in the world.

It never occured to me that it could actually be a bible, however. it does make more sense!

Thanks for that Helly Angel.

Yes, for example The New Testament - isnt that big as whole Bible. Or it may be some sort of prayer book.

Yes, with 99% one of those and not playing cards.

Pack of cigatettes not impossible, but the holding speaks more of Bible/prayer book.

For cigarettes-theory speaks the rapist, feeling a little sorry - tried to console her a little... In those days a pack of cigarettes was in fact a good gift, or a good payment. Not for a rape - but surely for a intercourse.

Now that you mention it, it does look more like a cigarette pack than anything else mentioned so far.

I think it is more something with pages or something like cards as it appears to be elongated (like when you slide pages or cards) in the 2nd and 4th photos - however, her hand looks to be seriously traumatised...swelling looks quite bad! Poor woman, the more I look at the images the more I feel sorry for her.
