Bulgarian stug3

Post by mav » 19 Sep 2006 12:53

I have seen a picture of a Bulagarian Stug3 with a pig head cast gun front.

But didn't the Germans supply the Bulagarians with Stug 3 in 1943 so how did the Bulgarians get a late war Stug3 with a pig head cast front?

The cast gun mantlet was introduced in production in November 1943. According to Spielberger, the Bulgarian StuGs were made between February and December 1943. Bulgaria was to have 55 StuGs, but by February 1944, only 45 had been delivered. So a Bulgarian StuG III with a cast mantlet is possible. IIRC, the Bulgarians turned on their former allies and fought with the Red Army in 1944/45, so I guess it could also be a captured vehicle from later in the war.

Also worthy of note is the fact that some of the StuG's sent to Bulgaria were of the type made with the Pz III Ausf M exhaustbut these had the bolted mantlet.
