In Carius's 13th illustration, the drawing, the upper StuG III has a different exhaust. Is that part of a 'fording kit'?

Yes according to Walther J. Spielberger in Sturmgeschutz and It's Variants.
It is either a M.A.N purpose built 8./Z.W. Panzerkampfwagen Ausf M chassis Stug, or a rebuilt chassis with Deep Fording Exhaust as per the standard PzIII Ausf M
