An interesting question about PzIVH's armor...

Hi everyone!:)

Such an interesting problem I want to talk about. In Spielberger's book "Begleitwagen PanzerKampfwagen IV" 1998 co-authored by Thomas Jentz PzIVH/J's turret front armor is desribed as "50" mm. In the former book it is "80" mm.

The primary documents it is quoting are presented in Pawlas: "Datenblätter...." from 1976 and are copies of documents made by Reichminister für Rüstung und Kriegsproduktion in 1944. They are handwritten and contain a number of peculiarities and the dataformat is maybe not consistent. (Sorry CBO!...:))

You should find the document mentioned on http://www.pbase.com/image/8237282 (Thanks Isegrim!:))

It's clearly seen that the document is filled by hand and PZIVH/J's turret is described as "80" mm average. Actually, perhaps it's a simple mistaken or it's right.

I'm sure I'm not a competent person to decide it.I'm only curious.:)I don't know any armor site and the few book I have got describing PzIVH's front turret armor/gun mantle as "80" mm but this means nothing of course.

Also I'm sorry to CBO have taken up this again... I'm wondering conclusions will come up.:)

So that it is...Which is the correct turret thickness of PzIVH?

Respectfully...Col.Valentine (hey...I'm still to young and have much to study!)

The remaining 30mm were first bolted on on the Ausf. G, and later used as a single 80m plate with the Ausf. H - so both answers are right...

Hi! Christian:)

That is it,because it's probably wrong. You are talking about the Panzer's hull and superstructure.

PzIVG armor thickness is

ARMOR PROTECTION
Front Side Rear Top/Bottom
Hull 50/50+30mm@78° 30mm@90° 20mm@81° 10mm@0°
Superstructure 50/50+30mm@80° 30mm@90° 20mm@78° 12mm@0-5°
Turret 50mm@79° 30mm@64° 30mm@80° 10mm@0-7°
Mantlet 50mm@60-90°

PzIVH

Front Side Rear Top/Bottom
Hull 80mm@76° 30mm@90° 20mm@82° 10mm@0°
Superstructure 80mm@80° 30mm@90° 20mm@79° 12mm@0-5°
Turret 50mm@80° 30mm@64° 30mm@75° 15mm@0-7°
Mantlet 50mm@60-90° - - -

Respectfully...Col.Valentine:)
