Axis Non-Armored Vehicles quiz
Re: The official AHF Panzers & other vehicles quiz thread
Hello!
I'm not an expert in Panzerwaffe, so participate in this quiz quite rarely. Still, you left me no choice.
Schwimmpanzer II (at least judging by the title of the photo here: http://worldwartwozone.com/photopost/da ... _float.jpg)

1943 Tatra powered Luchs reconnaissance tank prototype
Re: The official AHF Panzers & other vehicles quiz thread
Well, according to my source, this vehicle had Maybach engine.
So, most probably you mean different vehicle. But could you give its official German designation, if there was such?
Best regards, Aleks

Re: The official AHF Panzers & other vehicles quiz thread
Aleks, If only the turret and exhaust had been different I'd have said Gefechtsaufklärer Leopard due to the wheels and hull shape.

Re: The official AHF Panzers & other vehicles quiz thread
Hi
I still think its a Tatra powered Luchs.
My source is "Czechoslovak Armored Fighting Vehicles 1918-1948" by Kliment and Francex, page 223.
Some confirmation I found at:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... &start=345
http://www.panzerbaer.de/types/wh_pzkfw_ii_luchs-a.htm
It makes me curious which source you used.

Kees, that looks more like the superstructure of a Leopard with your Tatra engine and a turret all its own, only the wheels are the same as the Luchs.

Re: The official AHF Panzers & other vehicles quiz thread
I am far from a armored vehicle expert (in fact it was my first ever answer on a quiz question on tanks)
I only recognised the photo and used a well respected source and saw it confirmed by an earlier posting on this forum as well as on the Panzerbaer website; Nevertheless, I am 100 % positive that the photo was taken at Tatra. As far as the superstructure is concerned, I have to leave the discussion to the experts.

Re: The official AHF Panzers & other vehicles quiz thread
Hello!
Well, I see my question has caused a little discussion here.
What can I say? Like Kees, I'm not a Panzerwaffe expert, so the only thing I can do is to tell that here:
http://www.aviarmor.net/TWW2/tanks/germany/vk1602.htm
this vehcile is named as VK 1602 Leopard and the caption says that this is its prototype during trials in summer 1942 with Pz.II turret.
So, Alanmccoubrey was in fact almost correct, and I think he deserves the right to post next question.
Best regards, Aleks

Re: The official AHF Panzers & other vehicles quiz thread
Aleks, The turret is from a Pz II Ausf J I think and would have been standing in for the "Puma" turret with which the Leopard would have been fitted. I dislike going against Kees's source book though as Kliment is very accurate, I would hope that in fact the same vehicle or one very like it was used for the Tatra trials and that would explain the different identifications. Let's leave this one for a couple of days to see if a realexpert chimes in ?

Re: The official AHF Panzers & other vehicles quiz thread
Phil, Phil, Phil:
How I do love the puckish British sense of humour.........
I too was not sure if Henning means the purpose of the truck or the marque of the truck and to be honest I am unable at this point to answer either question.
The cab is obviously military and the other ID tips are the vertical louvres at the front of the bonnet that we can see and what appear to be a second set of louvres, also vertical, below those.
I will probably not have time this evening to investigate further, I looked through several books on German trucks, and my next possibilities are perhaps a Swiss or Austrian truck.
I think we should also congratulate Henning on his command of the English language. Goodness knows, I cannot write anything in German and barely can read "Technical German".
I am stubbornly proud that as a Yank, I am fluent in Swedish and Spanish and I can get by in the other Scandinavian languages as well as Portuguese because I lived in Sweden and Peru for a few years each which is not the norm for us barbarians but there are probably 100 other languages that are total "Greek To Me" which is a popular way in my country of saying I do not understand the language.
I hope someone can answer Henning's question properly.
Bill
