2.Panzer-Division Panthers in Normandy 1944
Hello,
I am looking for information regarding the colors used on the 2.Panzer-Division Panthers in Normandy 1944. Photos seem to be hard to come by and I've not found any color profiles either. Any ideas on camo patterns?
Happy New Year,
Mike

Sample camo patterns
You can view the camo pattern you are looking for at the bottom of this page. An excellent site as well!

I think that the camo pattern is very similar for all Panthers of the german units. There is no specific camo of the 2 PzD
I send pictures of a destroyed and burned Panther. In many french books this one is supposed to be a Panther of the I./Pz.Rgt 3 of the 2.PzD because this units has been support infantry units of the 12 SS HJ at this date and in this sector.
The crossroad is the crossroad between the D139 and the D 173 between Cheux,Tessel,Rauray and Fontenay le Pesnel (14 km W of Caen).
Its not easy to see the camo pattern but I ll search if Ihave profiles of this unit.

Panther 204 is most likely 12SS. If I recal correctly 12SS was active in the area wih tanks, just like 2Pz. However the numbering style resembles the style used by 12SS and not really that of 2Pz. Apart from that 204 as a nummber fits the 12SS way of numbering their vehicles:
204, 205
215, 216, 217, 218, 219
225, 226, 227, 228, 229
235, 236, 237, 238, 239
204 is not a "normal" company number. For some good examples of 2Pz Panther go to ML:

- If you look at the numbering style, 2Pz markings are all fairly thin, while 12SS numbers are fairly fat. The size between 12SS co's seems to differ with 2nd Co. having fairly small numbers compared to 1st and 3rd Co. The size of the number of 4th company vehicles appears to be close to 2nd Co. again.
- There are pictures of Panther 302 of 2Pz. This indicates the numbers used by the company commander was probably 301. 204 does not fit in such a numbering system.
-Considering the location, according to Lefèvre, both 3PzReg. and 12SSPz.Reg. fought in the area so both are a posibility. Bernage says that "Lefèvre has attributed it to I/3rd PzReg." but Lefèvre (at least in Pintan) does NOT do that. Instead Lefèvre leaves the option of both regiments open.
When comparing styles and numbers 12SS is in my opinion a lot more logical than 2Pz.

Hello all!
Thi is the profiles of Panzer IV and Panthers of different units during the Battle of Normandy. What about the pictures of Panthers of 2.Panzer-Division I don`t see the photo of Panther #311. I see only #321 and #424 and their turret numbers was red, no white.
The Commander of I/3.Panzer-Regiment during the Battle of Normandy was Major Joachim von Lehsten. May be somebody knows who was the Commanders of 1,2,3 & 4 Companies?
Thanks
Igor
