High !
About 12 years ago I last have seen - since I moved out of the area, it might still exist - a wood-gas-vehicle.
This was a late 50s self made conversion of an Austin Cambridge, so no WW II vehicle.
It was an old guy who had it and at that time was considered a bit peculiar but for his chice of fuel rather respected and admired.
He came to the floorboard factory behing my Dads Gas station to collect waste wood cut offs which were ideal combustion material, dry hardwood, cut in very small pieces.
Those small wood cut offs were used by us too, to heat in addition to normal logs, and you had to pay attention because they produced much gas in the oven and to much could really blow up your oven.

second anectode, so only marginal to the Topic:

On a steep hill outside the village, just after the war, lived an old woman a bit crazy in a shack. She was terribly afraid of electricity and the telephone.
The sawmill operated a wood-gas truck, which once didn't have enough engine power to climp the Hill under a very big load, so they used the trucks winch to assist in climbing.
When the guys draged out the winch cable the woman ran to the gendarmerie station and yelled "help me, help me, they bring the telephone cable to my house"
So my Dad told me
"nuts"

This is all very interesting. I can not imagine what it was like before, during the wartime years and after the war was like for other countries especially inside Germany. Driving wood gas vehicles in those days would have been the equivalent of driving electric vehicles today.

On the dvd
"Beeld van Nederland"de oorlogjaren - 1940-1945
ditribution VTCMEDIA ordernr 2571
(Only Dutch spoken and unfortunally subtitles)

It shows ao pictures of the Dutch Army prior to 10 mei 1940 and all kinds of newsreals during the German occupation of Holland.

You can see moving pictures of a car on ""household"gas.
I guess it's the same as used for old streetlights
Further more one car one woodgas and one motorcycle with steam engine.

Hi,

The range might have been about the same, but as electric cars are clean, the chauffeur of wood gasifier car looked almost like coal miner after days work :-)
