Hi all.
News from Estonia.
Need your help in determining the number of the tank commander's turret of Tiger.
We found a commander in the turret area of operation Shtrachvits 3. I'm thinking that this tower with the tank commander Otto Carius.
"2. 20 april.
The attack is continued across the datch, but Geman artillery fire falls chort and decimates the supporting infantry. Anofer Tiger has ti be pushed into the marshy ground. 1 Tiger is distroyed by mine: Carius tiger is knocked out by an ISU152. The operation is called off."

I hope for your help in the identification. I will answer any additional questions.

Best regards.

Interesting find! is that April encounter the one that almost killed him? it's mentioned in Achtung Panzer, but I would expect the cupola to be destroyed:

Otto Carius: "The shell cut the right part of the commander’s cupola. I was not beheaded because I had bent down to light my cigarette. Suddenly the Russian assault gun appeared and I gave an order to the gunner to open fire. Kramer shot, and a second shell, from another assault gun, hit in the turret. I can not remember which way I left the Tiger. The head phones-the only thing I have from my destroyed Tiger".

Vit:

Thank you for the photos. That seems to be a standard Early cupola. (I would love some precise measurements!)

If there is no impact mark then it's not from Carius' tank. It is likely to come from a tank that exploded. Did you find anything else in the area?

There is probably no way to link the number 502 to a specific tank, but it suggests that we are at the very end of the Early Tiger production run.

Vit:

We have a photo of Carius in his cupola, and I am afraid that it does not match your one. The sighting bar on the front vision slit is different.

The claimed losses: 20 April 1944,3 Tigers are lost, 2 lost in action, 1 destroyed by crew&

What kind of numbers of tanks were lost on that day?
This is a very interesting question.

We found another place where the Tiger had been blown up that day. There are many small parts after the explosion.
Where found the commander's turret, no other details on the Tigris.
