German Use of Captured Armor

Post by Ivan K » 05 Oct 2010 06:40

Some argue that the Germans did not rely all that heavily on captured armor (with the exception of converted French machines). It seems to me, however, that captured equipment became of critical importance, especially the East. Just how many T-34s, KVs and Shermans did the Germans employ, and with what modifications? Were there official aces?

The Germans were desperate enough to make use of captured POLISH tanks in WW2 - never mind Russian. So you can take it as read that they used practically anything they could get their hands on that was serviceable. German tank production was far too low in the early part of the war, and only got up to speed in 1944, just in time to run out of fuel supplies. Oops.

Almost forgot - http://reibert.info/forum/. If you haven't seen it: a HUGE site with about 237 albums, some with hundreds of pics; countless ones of captured Russian armor (scores of T-34s). The albums also contain some highly anti-Semitic images. K
