Sturmhaubitze 42 L/28 Ausf. G

Good Evening AHF
I have seen couple of things floating around about Stuh 42, but I have never actually found much information about this armoured vehicle. From what I can gather from pictures and models of the vehicle as that its mainly used for infantry support, was the main gun used for tank hunting, which Stug III were mainly used for in later stages of the war. Does anyone know any links which hold information about the machine, it would be appreciated.

Adom, the StuH 42 was issued to the independent StuG Abteilung/Brigades from about mid 1943 onwards, usually 9 per unit and so fulfilled the tasks of those units. They were not usually issued to StuG equipped units within divisions.

Hello to all :D; a little complement.......................

The "true" assault gun of Manstein ??

As later versions of the StuG III armed with the 75mm L/48 barrel began to be increasingly used primarily in an anti-tank role, arose the need for an artillery vehicle to support the infantry against soft and hidden targets (the initial goal that gave origin to the Stug III). Therefore, a new vehicle based on the Stug III Ausf F was designed. It was armed with the howitzer 105 mm leFH 18. This version of the StuG was designated Sturmhaubitze (StuH 42) and went into action for the first time in November 1942 (nine experimental vehicles went into action on November 22, 1942 with the 3./ Stug Abt 185). Later versions were based on the Stug Ausf. G and had a longer barrel equipped with a double-deflector mouth brake. A "Saukopf" gun mantlet (pig's head) was also installed in the latest versions of StuG Ausf. G, although with a larger size.

The StuH had the usual characteristics of the StuG, but was limited to a purely anti-personnel role and did not fire anti-tank ammunition. Like most howitzers, however, it had hollow-charge ammunition to give it some anti-armor capability.

Prototypes and initial series hade a muzzle brake but this was later omitted.
The main gun was not changed so the barrel lenth remained the same - only difference was muzzle brake.
The "Saukopfblende" was actually named "Topfblende", Saukopf is either from postwar or taken from some crew art painted onto the Topfblende

Hi all
thank you Raul for the interesting picture.
Here three more very similar StuH.

Merry Christmas to all

Maybe the same unit?
Possibly, all of them were employing spare track links (of T-34?) in front of the hull in order to increase the protection....Cheers. Raúl M 8-).
