28cm Sturmmörser 38D
what if or not?
Re: 28cm Sturmmörser 38D
on this small chassis? Nope
Re: 28cm Sturmmörser 38D
Where's the engine gone? Silly-hobby
Re: 28cm Sturmmörser 38D
No way to get one round fired without destroying the running gear. And yes, there would be no engine inthat design.

As to destroying the running gear, it is perfectly practical to fire such a large weapon with no stress on the chassis. one only has to look at the Russian breech- loaded 240 MM mortar 2S4. This looks to be the same concept. the cutout in the roof would indicate that the mortar is carried on the vehicle barrel facing forward and emplaced for firing by rotating the mount to the rear where the baseplate of the tube is supported for firing directly on the ground, not transmitting any firing force to the chassis. As stated this system is not theoretical , but was used on production Soviet vehicle. With this system it is possible to have room for the power pack under the rear deck as the system is transported on top of the deck not inside it, although on the model I see no sign of engine rear deck cooling grills. In all fairness the picture does not show the rear deck nor bottom of the weapon. In short based on the fact a similar vehicle actually exists I see no technical reason such a vehicle is not technically feasible.

Apoligies, I got the pics from the internet for my private use in building scale models and have no idea of the site I got them from.

Yeah Roland, that'd work.
But I know the 38D, 38T, from years of images all stored in my pattern recognising grey matter, and that model art image looks like there's not enough engine behind the Commanders usual position, (top left rear of pic ) it's too low back there. The rundumfeur mg+shield is not in the usual place. In a real 38D there wasn't much room under that front left mg, that's where the brakes & final drives were. The idler isn't 38D,its old 38T. The wheel spacing looks too bunched up, like 38T not 38D. But at least the wheels look like they're steel band, not rubber tire.
The biggest error is how many rounds could it carry? 28cm arty/mortar shells weigh 200-300kg and 120-170 cm long. So those 2 guys wouldn't likely be able to lift 1, as is implied. And how the f do u get the shell in the tube, Where's all the ancilliary lifting gear that would be required?
I call it shoddy. Aus der traume.
