251/9 Kanonwagen als Stuka zu Fuss

Post by bam » 14 Jul 2019 00:59

Synchronicity.
A few days ago I reread Tieke's Tragedy of the Faithful, about the IIIrd SS corps. I noticed something I hadn't picked up on first time round. It says that when 11th SS Nordland arrived on the Leningrad Oranienbaum front in Jan 44 with their fully equipped, 5 companies strong, Panzer Aufklarung abt, the Kanonezug of SPW 251/9s were fitted with werfkorper rocket frames (Stuka zu fuss) for added firepower! Bonkers eh? I'd never heard of or seen that combo before. The text mentioned they used their 251/9s for indirect fire support, even backing them up into ditches to get more elevation and range. I'd not heard of 251/9s in the indirect fire mode. The werfkorper rockets would fit that role too.
There are 2 photos of 251/9s within that book, but sadly without rocket frames.
So I filed the story away, wondering if I'd ever see images of such a beast. Then..
Today I saw Panzerwrecks have issued a release date for their eagerly awaited Panzers in Berlin opus, coming 15th August. In the accompanying list of vehicle images in that book is... 251/9 als Stuka zu fuss! Heller cool! Can't wait.
Anyone else got images of 251/9 Stuka zu fuss?

Hi,

Yes, they fitted four of their six 251/9.s with rockets frames, the other two carried spares. One of the spares carrier is shown in the photo below, its tactical number is 51x, and carried four spare rockets.

Photos of an unpainted model.

Hi,

Have not seen the Berlin book yet of course, but in there is another published photo taken of the rear of a knocked out 251/9 with rocket racks in the Franzosischestrasse, Berlin. Its tactical number is 515 and its again Nordland.
