Mike, you will have to be more specific than "France 1944", the only thing that this photograph tells us is that the tank didn't belong to the HJ Division because it didn't have a 724, otherwise it could be just about any Panzer Division.

Alan, I'm making the research for a friend...the pics are certainly taken in Normandy but not sure!

Yes they did but their numbering started at XX5 for each platoon so while this is the 4th tank in second platoon of 7 Company such a tank in HJ would have been 728.Michael Kenny wrote: ↑07 Nov 2019, 01:22They had a 7 kpAlanmccoubrey wrote: ↑06 Nov 2019, 21:28Mike, you will have to be more specific than "France 1944", the only thing that this photograph tells us is that the tank didn't belong to the HJ Division because it didn't have a 724,

Hi,
Its possible to reduce the possibilities of which Panzer division this Pz IV #724 belonged to;-
2 PzDiv used stencil outlined numbers, sometimes filled in
9 PzDiv its 7th Kp was Panther tanks
11 PzDiv used large untidy numbers
21 PzDiv used all white numbers painted on the turret shielding doors.
116 PzDiv numbers painted on the left and right rear sides of the turret shielding only
130 PzDiv used very small white numbers where the 724 is painted on the turret side shielding
1 SS PzDiv used the same numbering style and position as per the photo of 724
2 SS PzDiv used tall thin numbers
9 SS PzDiv their 7th kp was StuG III
10 SS PzDiv their 7th Kp was StuG III
12 SS PzDiv as already stated, could not have a panzer numbered 724.
consequently still believe it to be a 1st SS PzIV
cheers leonard paul

So that casts doubt on the original being an LAH vehicle then, the "4" is not in the same style.

Hi Alan,
yes, the 4's are not the same but neither are the 3's seen on 743 and 723 in the montage above, but they all are LSSAH
cheers leonard paul
