Hitler's car?

#1

Post by mainer » 03 Dec 2019, 00:08

Hello, my great uncle Rudolph Billipp was a US Army officer in WWII and afterwards, in the attached photo he poses in a car in Germany that according to family legend belonged to Hitler.

Your thoughts. Thank you, Peter

Hi Peter,

sorry, but I have big doubts. It is a cabriolet only for two persons type 500 K. Hitler prefered bigger and armored cars.

Regards

Bert

Hitler's car was a 1941 Mercedes-Benz 770K, Model 150. It was collected by some members of the American Counter-Intelligence Corps and later displayed in New York.

One of his cars was on display for a time at the National Museum of Transport here in St. Louis. Big fancy car, but I was more interested in the motorcycle Steve McQueen used in a certain movie. (One of several on the set, of course.)

Hello all,
I think it is a little confusing to say "Hitler's car". There was no single make, model or type used, he had a stable of cars available to him. I think it depended on the status of the visit, whether to go with one of the G4s or a 770, or indeed one of the other limousines. Certainly he was seen and photographed in several different cars all of which could lay claim to being "Hitler's car".
That said, a very interesting thread, thank you all,
Kerry.

Hi,

Yes "Hilter's car" is a very misleading term, he really did not own any cars himself. but in another sense, being the head of the Third Reich he would in effect have owned everything. :D

However apart from cars that were gifted to him by various car makers, which were simply put into a pool of usable vehicles, the usual situation was that all of the 57 M-Benz 6x4 G4's and most of the 205 4x2 M-Benz 770's were scattered throughout the Third Reich and its occupied terrortries, and in daily use by local NSDAP members.

So whenever Hilter was in the vicinity, he got the local car, which was usually one of the above two types of M-Benz. Occassionally in more remote areas one of these vehicle types was sent to him, but most often there was one already available.

Yes, der Führer had many cars. But he didn't like to drive!
