Stug III Jan '44?

Post by raymos » 20 Mar 2020 19:05

I'm looking at Hell's Gate by Douglas Nash. There's a very interesting photo on p107 of a StuG III, labelled as awaiting the next Soviet attack. It is credited as Bundesarchiv 709/303/17. It's interesting to me because it is a late production with no zimmerit, which makes me think it is unlikely from the time of the Korsun pocket (what the book is about).

I've tried searching the online Bundesarchiv photo collection but have had no luck with the number sequence.

I have two questions:
- any tips about how I might find it online?
- is it possible this was a StuG III in Wiking at that time?

Thanks,
Ray

I have just tried to find the photograph on Bundesarchiv and that number came back as a civilian pictured in 1949 !

Thanks for letting me know, Alan. You got farther than I did, I couldn't get anything. How do you enter a number sequence like that? Is there some trick?

Phil

Ah, I think I've figured it out. These are part of bild 101i and the 709 is what comes after that....

101I-709-303-17 doesn't produce anything I'm afraid. Have you found it on BA ? If so who was the photographer ?

Hi Alan,

I did not find -17 but I found the set of pictures 101i-709 which led me to 303-14 which is the same vehicle pictured in Nash's book. The photographer is Theodor Scheerer. I don't know how to directly link to that picture, the URL seems to remain the index page:

Thanks Dennis!

To anyone who has used this photo archives, should one have a high degree of confidence in the dates assigned in the online archive?

Thanks Deniss, I too found them but the extra "0" put me off. :)
