Tank attack Elst/Driel21/22 September 1944

Post by keith A » 01 Apr 2020 12:47

Five Tiger (?) tanks knocked out at the crossroads between Elst and Driel. Three by a combination of mines and PIATS together with two more which were set on fire by British infantry after being abandoned by their crews. The German tanks may have been from 9th or 10th SS Divisions.

Can anyone identify the German units in this action and confirm the results?

According to this website

http://www.worcestershireregiment.com/b ... t_1944.php

"At this time Elst was occupied by the 10th SS Panzer Division 'Frundsberg' commanded by Major Knaust, with tank support."

I believe the Tigers may have been part of Schwere-Panzer-kompanie Hummel. If so then the kompanie was all but wiped out.

I notice it did reappear later in the war.

Apologies!

This website answers all my questions. A little patience and I would have saved myself some embarassment.
