Ammunition storage in StuG IV

Post by RandJS » 30 Sep 2020 03:13

Hi all,

The StuG IV carried 63 rounds for the main weapon.
24 of the rounds were stored in two racks behind he loader.
Where were the 39 rounds stored?

Thanks

The StuG Iv was based on the (obviously) panzer IV chassis. Since it had no turret, it did not need the auxiliary generator for the electric traverse. I would assume they could store more rounds than the StuG III. Sometimes there are issues with 'hot shots', meaning ammunition stored in hotter internal space, but am not sure if that was an issue.

Yoozername,

Thanks, that is quite possible, and the StuG IV fuel capacity (430l) was also less than the Panzer IVH (470l). I seem to remember a photo showing some ammunition stored at the back end of the crew compartment, but it was maybe 12 shells.
Cheers-
