Panther with a Panzer IV turret
Panther with a Panzer IV turret
Why does this Panther have a Panzer IV turret? Could it rotate on the Panther's larger turret ring?
As you can see we can also see the only turreted "Porsche-Tiger" that was used with Schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung 653.

Looks like a pretty poorly done Photoshop...

Re: Panther with a Panzer IV turret
Thank you!
So it was a Bergepanther with a Panzer IV turret bolted on top.
A reply on War Thunder's history forum that may or may not be correct:
"Well it was not actually a functioning tank. The Panzer V/IV was actually a field modification made by Schwere Panzerjager Albt 653 (Or was it 356) whereby a Bergepanther had a Panzer IV's turret bolted on to it to act as a roof and provide more stowage space. The turret could not rotate and to this day there is still no evidence that the gun was active."

Re: Panther with a Panzer IV turret
The Panther turret could rotate 360 degrees and was a huge improvement over the previous design. It also featured better armor protection. However, if a Panther was caught in an ambush that disabled its turret, it was now defenseless against enemy fire.tracks031 wrote: ↑09 Oct 2020, 22:28

Re: Panther with a Panzer IV turret
I wonder if the gun in the turret was functional or not. Usually command tanks have fake-barrels as there is no need to use the real thing.
I am assuming that the breech mechanism of this tank was removed, but they kept the barrel/mantlet to look the part.
