Panzerjäger-Abt. Organization Pz. & Pz.Gr-Divisions

Hello!

I am wondering if anyone have a rough organization of a Panzerjäger-Abteilung of Panzer-Divisions and Panzergrenadier-Divisions from 1944 and onwards.

- How many tank destroyers were supposed to be in the battalion?
o I read that for the units that received Jagdpanzer IVs, they usually were equipped with 11 vehicles. Is this true?
o What other vehicles were intended in the organization of the 1944 Pz. & Pz.Gr. divisions?

Hi Rittmeister,

I have an information about the organisation of the Panzerdivision 1944 (freie Gliederung - free structure) according to the source: Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen - Abteilung Organisation - Kartei Nummer 2400 - 44 g.K. from 15th August 1944 :

1 mixed Panzerjäger-Abteilung with
- staff and staff company (1 le. MG, 1 m. SPW, 3 le. Panzerjäger IV)
- 1 Panzerjägerkompanie (Sturmgeschütze) (14 le. Panzerjäger IV)
- 2 schwere Panzerjägerkompanien mot. Z (each 12 le. MG and 12 x 7,5cm Pak 40)
- 1 supply company (3 le. MG, 2 Bergepanzer III)

In another document there was only one schwere Panzerjägerkompanie mot. Z with 12 le. MG and 12 x 7,5cm Pak 40, but two Panzerjägerkompanien, planned with 14, but really only with 10 le. Panzerjäger IV (temporary).

Regards

Bert

You can see a full list of authorised equipment here:
https://panzerworld.com/panzer-division-1944
https://panzerworld.com/panzer-grenadier-division-1944

Of course, in real life, units would almost invariably have less equipment.

Machine gun.

'le. MG' means 'leichtes Maschinengewehr', or 'light machine gun'.

But what about all the Panzer Divisions which were issued with a full battalion's worth of Jagdpanzer IV, SdKfz 162 ? That being one for the CO and three companies each of 10 vehicles.

Hi Alan,

a very interesting link. Thanks for posting.
Maybe this organisation of a Panzerjägerabteilung of a Panzerdivision from November 1944 can give You an answer. Source: "Die deutsche Panzerjägertruppe 1935 - 1945" by Wolfgang Fleischer and Richard Eiermann.

Best regards

Bert, If we take the Panzer Divisions in Normandy, other than LAH and DR, as an example they all had either two(21 vehicles) or three(31 vehicles) full companies of Jagdpanzer IV L/48 with just the 10 vehicles per company. All this is there in that link so I am very surprised to see 14 vehicles per company in your chart. And nor do the figures change when they started issuing the L/70 version.

Hi Alan,

thank You very much for Your reply. You are right. That´s the difference between the planned and real number of vehicles per company.
Please, compare it with the other document I posted:
Panzerjägerabteilung of a Panzerdivision 1944 with one schwere Panzerjägerkompanie mot. Z with 12 le. MG and 12 x 7,5cm Pak 40 and two Panzerjägerkompanien, planned with 14, but really only with 10 le. Panzerjäger IV (temporary).

Best regards

Bert
