Hello drs. John. I've been to the Museum in Amersfoort and obtained a copy of your book on the M39. Looks good and very interesting.

One question about something you mention by the side about the first Dutch tank a Renault FT17. You say that one piece was bought. I agree with this as pictures never show two FT's together and some serious sources (Schulten&Theil and a eyewhithnissreport in Armamentaria No 29 from Armymuseum in Delft) support one piece. However In the museum some picture comments say two FT's were bought. Do you have documents which prove the "one pices" story?

Unfortunately the photo caption in our museum is wrong. Some time ago I made a number of comments on the explaining texts in the exposition. Untill now time has failed to have them rewritten.

In most cases Schulten and Theil is a reliable source. Morover I have studied documents in the Dutch National Archives in which only one Renault tank was mentioned.

Greetings

John

Not a DAF M39, but this seems the best thread for all Dutch vehicles. So here a Dutch Vickers Carden Loyd Mk VI at Waalhaven. From current ebay.

I would like to claim that this particular vehicle is NOT a Dutch specimen.
The dimensions where somewhat different on early and late models, my guess would go for a Danish L-180.

There were two of these, a somewhat wider vehicle with what seems, road wheels of smaller diameter / or a larger wheel housing, than later models such as the Dutch one.

I have been researching these Landsverks for many years with access to e.g. lots of factory photos of models of L-181 sold to Lithuania and Holland. L-182 to Finland and L-180 to Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Holland and Sweden.

I have also been tracking each individual vehicle in German service, when possible.

I would go for a Danish L-180, but I have to make further research before making a 100% statement.

The photo of the Dutch M38 from ebay by Franzl Rider on 26 mar 2008.

Nobody discover the speciality of the photo. It is one of the two L-180 Command Cars. The difference can be seen in the top of the turret where You have prismas all around. And the canon are a dummy.

CristerB is right that is a picture of the command version. Didn't notice before, well spotted. In fact I think that is the only picture I have ever seen of the command version.

There are actually two more photos in this thread of a L-180 Command Car (1 of 2 ever built).

They were used as command vehicles in each of the two Dutch armoured car squadrons, then taken over by two different WH Infanterie Divisionen, where they served in the Aufklärungs Kompanie. Exactly what division/s is more or less unknown, although one is identified to 90%.

Probably there are professional authors who know more but have no serious plans to publish anything on the subject, nor are they willing to share this information with others who might write about the subject. 'EXCHANGE' does not seem to be an option - only GET, GET and GET.

The M39's in these two pictures are marked with the same insignia as used on the British Light Mark VI conversions to 105mm SP done by Becker and commanded by him as 12./AR 227. In Beute-Kraftfahrzeuge und -Panzer der deautschen Wehrmacht Spielberger notes that 12.(mot)/AR 227 had several of the M 39's from the Dutch 3rd Armoured Squadron "fall into their hands". Is it not possible that these M39's were also converted by Becker ? Alan

Landsverk L180

Post by FKDeane » 20 Sep 2008 13:26

Since there has been so much interesting coverage of the Landsverk L180 used by Holland I thought that people might be like to see some pictures of the Irish L180.

Landsverk delivered 2 L180 to Ireland in 1938, 6 in 1939. It was planned to continue purchasing L180 at this rate but due to the war situation it was impossible to get further deliveries. 5 ready for delivery in 1940 were taken over by the Swedish Army.

These L180 had a Buessing-NAG chassis (similar to the German 6 Rad) with steering positions front and rear. They were popular in Ireland and were in active service as escort vehicles until the Eighties. Obviously, spare parts became a problem so in 1957 the Buessing-NAG V-8 engines were replaced with Ford V-8. Earlier supplies of the Overmann solid tyres ran out and had to be replaced by inflatable tyres.

The L180 for Ireland and Denmark were intended for reconnaissance so were armed with 2cm Madsen automatic cannon and did not have a MG in the rear.

L180 now on display in Holland was donated by the Irish Army as all of the Dutch ones were lost after being taken over by the Wehrmacht.
