Hi Bill,

Thanks for the information, but it was only this picture in that e-bay sale.
It's a pity i now ,but a nice picture any way.

Another question Bill:
Was this type of crane (10 Ton) common on trucks, that you know of ????? ,are there other pictures of this configuration,or is this a rare picture????

I've never seen this configuration.

Regards

Sander

Hey Sander:

I will try to remember where I have some railroad stuff and also some missile stuff and/or try to remember a couple of sites I took off my bookmark list some time ago that dealt with such things.
While I have never seen that photo before, I do seem to remember seeing similar type trucks with quite large cranes and that was probably where it was.
Not common, I would imagine as it was just as easy to mount such cranes on railroad waggons but I suppose they could have been used for moving wrecked waggons/engines that were too far off the tracks or even to lift tanks, aircraft and heavy items used for construction such as concrete pipes etc. on to the railroad waggons.
I'll keep looking.
Cheers
Bill

This is a tank dummy for exercise purposes. As you can clearly see it is in fact a pz III turret on a pz I chassis. As pz I became to weak to face enemy tanks, they were withdrawn from the front and used to school nascent tank drivers..

Sander:

Nailed it. A positive ID is a Faun 9 ton typ L900!!!

There are two excellent photos of the vehicle in the expanded English language version of the book you indicated, and which I have and it is clear as a bell. Everything matches. Both photos show it used by a Railway Engineer Regiment in USSR.
Another mystery solved.
Cheers
Bill

Hello,

I posted this photo in one of my other threads but got no answer. Does anyone know the make and model of this three axle car.

Regards,
Larrister

Evening Larrister:

For the moment, the closest I can get you is that it appears very similar, not identical in all respects to a Horch "Gelaendewagen" of ca. 1926. 6 photos of this vehicle can be found on pages 36 and 37 of Walter Spielberger's book "Die Motorisierung der Deutschen Reichswehr 1920-1935. If my German works, there were 5 made, and most of the photos look like the vehicles were under test. Daimler also built a few on the G1 chassis but they do not look quite the same as your photo. Can't be sure but I will bet I am right on this one.

Hello Bill,

Thanks for the information. I guess the two wheels at the back were spares.

Evening Larrister:

I found in Bart Vanderveen's book "Observers Army Vehicle Directory to 1940", a photo of the left side of what I believe is your vehicle. He describes it as "Car, Heavy, 6X4 Kfz. 21 (Horch-Argus 71)".
However, he describes it as a six seater and yours is an eight seater. Next to that picture is something called a "Car, Heavy, 6X6 Kfz.21 (Selve-Voran M)" which is an eight seater but none of the ID tips are even close.

The Horch looks in almost all respects very similar to your photo.
I will scan the photo and add it to this post in a bit.

Hello Bill,

Once again many thanks for all the effort that you have put into identifying the vehicle in my photo. I am sure the vehicle in the photo you supplied is the same as the one in my photo. It sure is interesting to see the tracks around the rear wheels in your photo. I guess the RW were trialing these types of vehicles to find a suitable all-terrain troop carrier. Do you know whether many were made as I have never come across any other photos of them.

Best regards,
Larrister

Larrister:

Always happy to try and help out.

While my knowledge of "technical" German is pretty good, my knowledge of "conversational" German is not.
My best reading of Spielberger's book indicates that the RW was looking for a cross country rather light weight personnel carrier vehicle in the mid to late 1920's. Daimler, Horch and Selve-Voran as far as I can translate it, offered very small series of test vehicles to the RW. 5 Horch, 7 Daimler and I did not see a figure for Selve-Voran.

It would seem that none of those exact vehicles were ever produced further, but it did form the basis for vehicles that came on later that were of a similar nature. While a bit smaller, the Krupp Protze comes to mind as a sort of final result

Missed your comment on the tyres on the back of your photo and yes, those are spares.

The track system around the tyres was something that was tried by many companies but to the best of my knowledge was never widely adopted. You either had wheeled vehicles that could do the job as is, or you had fully tracked vehicles depending on the mission. This, of course, does not include half tracked vehicles which were purpose built with tracks on the rear of the vehicle and wheels on the front.

Cheers
Bill
