Hello. Any idea, what car was the donor for this Jeep conversion? I suspect it was Axis.

I found this on a Russian site labelled as a "Skoda 4s Prototype 1941" but I can find no other reference to the existence of this vehicle on the internet. Can anyone ID this. My first impression was post-war, but I really have no idea.
Hello,
Please have a look here.

Hi guys,
The whole text in translation from Czech says this:

"The Skoda 4S prototype was rolled out earlier, on Christmas eve 1940. It was still plain chassis without cab but after the Christmas it was fully completed. In the first days of the new year it was painted. Due to different reasons (a long story) it was rejected. The truck on the picture isn't the original 1940/41 prototype but a postwar one. Skoda has tried to resurrect the project in 1946, when at the end of the year the Swedish Navy has issued a tender for a prime mover. The Swedes invited Skoda too, because from the start of the war they used 21 Skoda 6V prime movers and their experience with these was favorable. Regretfully the Swedes didn't issue purchase order for 4S. As it is seen on the picture, the truck went in Sweden fitted with road tyres (from a bus) because it was impossible to find suitable cross country tyres then. The whole performance in Sweden was pure adventure. The trials took place in heavy and muddy terrain with serious climbs. Nevertheless 4S managed to pass a big part of the scheduled track with these bus tyres, but it wasn't able to cope with the domestic competitors, namely Scania-Vabis and Volvo. After Sweden Skoda has presented their 4S also in Denmark but on the same road tyres again and with the same results again. The Danish military board wrote in their report that "...if fitted with proper tyres, the truck certainly will be able to pass the trials successfully" but they didn't purchase it. And this was the definitive end of the model."

Well then, the picture from the rear I've posted must be of the original 1941 prototype, for the cross country tyres are well visible on it.
HTH
Cheers!

Hello ilfil and Henning,
Many thanks to you both in solving this mystery. The story is quite interesting and neatly clears up the discrepencies in the two photos. Your research and translation from the Czech are greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Max

Hi Sturm,

It is a Lorenz radio set on a Mercedes-Benz Lo2000 truck.
These were in use with Bulgarian Royal Airforce in the late 1930-early 1940's

Uncle-
Thanks for the front view-I wasn't aware of this photo,

Cheers,
Angel

Hi Sturm,
The bodies look similar but according to Holger the L 3 H 63 was used for the Kfz. 73 and the L 3 H 163 for the Kfz. 91. It's hard to tell but I don't see top bonnet vent flaps on your truck so I'd call it a Kfz. 73. Here is a Krupp Kfz. 91 for comparison.

Hi Max,
If Holger is right and L3H 63 was the only chassis for Kfz 73 then on the picture of Sturm there is Kfz 91. The truck on it, as correctly mentioned by him, is L3H 163 - the lack of front brake drums is clearly seen.

OK, I'll buy that. Upon magnification they also appear to be Trilex rims which further your point. I stand corrected.
