Bert, my eyes are going I know but I can't see "Oryolskij" or anything like it on thee side of that Ferdinand. It looks more like "Orlevsoj" to me.

Алексей , I did think that it was a "Moscow" Division but I still can't see anything to do with Oryol on the side of that Ferdinand which I read as saying "This vehicle was captured along with its crew by soldiers of the 129th (that word) Division".

Thanks, like I said my eyes are going. Still doesn't explain why a Moscow raised unit called itself Oryol ?

Alan,CAREFULLY read the material on the above link.
The 129th rifle division liberated the city of Orel on 4-5 august 1943.And therefore received the honorary name ”Orlovskaya”.

Sorry Алексей , I am plainly having a bad week, I see it now. Part of my problem was that I was looking for Oрлёвской and seeing Oрлoвской, why the change in spelling, I understand the change in pronounciation with two "O"s in the word but not the change in spelling.

Алексей , I did of course mean the "two vowels" not O's.

Think this Ferdinand was captured with its crew whilst they slept. The ground infantry retreated in the night, leaving them there (by accident).
