New delivery format for NARA microfilm/DVD rolls

#1

Post by Richard Hedrick » 20 Dec 2015, 19:54

Hi All,

I was placing an order on the NARA website today and notice that Electronic Transfer is now an option for deliver format when purchasing NARA rolls. Does anyone have any experience with this format?

I almost ordered using this format then chickened out and ordered a DVD instead. There seems to be enough issues getting a good DVD so I was not prepared to risk this format just yet.

It would be great if we could get some feedback from someone who has used it.

Thanks,
Richard

Hey Dan, thanks for you willingness to experiment with it. I take it its not very immediate if you did not get an email with a download link shortly after ordering it. It will be interesting to see what the process is. The order I placed above I received yesterday, Dec. 26th, so even ordering the DVD it only took 6 days. They have gotten a lot quicker at getting them out the door.

Thanks again,
Richard

Rich and all,
My order was acknowledged the same day on the 27th (though it went to my spam folder) and as of today (the 30th) it is still listed as "servicing"

I submitted an order on 26.12 (Saturday) and received an e-mail with a download link on 31.12 (Thursday). Four working days (Monday to Thursday) to find the reel, copy it and place on line sounds good to me. Plus it was $10 cheaper by not having to pay international postage. waiting time for me in the UK has been reduced from weeks to days. Am submitting another order and will see how long that takes.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Hello all,

I received the NARA e-mail yesterday (the 31st) for my digital order and the download went fine. The copies are very well done. So it took 5 days. Not a bad turnaround time. Just wanted to let everyone know that their new system does work satisfactorily at least in my eyes.

Guys thanks for the feedback on the download option.

Do you get the impression that the files are the same quality (size) as with a DVD. i would be concerned they might sacrifice quality to get the file size down to reduce bandwidth. Also is it a single zip download?

thanks again,
Richard

Rich,

Yes files were in a single zip file, all jpg's averaging a little under 2 megs each so the quality was fine. Hope this helps.

It's $125, so non-US residents save $10 by using the electronic transfer option.

The files are 300dpi scans - identical to the files you'll get on a CD/DVD (as far as I know, NARA stopped offering 600dpi scans a couple of years ago).

You get the rolls in a couple of days, so electronic transfer is by far the best method for ordering (unfortunately, some publications has not yet been included in the online-ordering system though, like T-1022...).

I ordered and it also took 6 working days to recieve the rolls. The quality was fine with no blured frames. Electronic Transfer option really simplifies ordering from NARA. About the only problem was figuring out how to find and select the roll I wanted to order.
